iLife '06: Why Can't the PC Do This?

1/31/2006 04:08:00 PM

Every year, Apple issues a new iLife upgrade, and every year, I stare in wonder at my Mac's monitor, noting the improvements and wondering why Microsoft and the PC industry can't create something as impressive as iLife for the Windows realm. Three years after the initial iLife release, iLife '06 is now available, and it's better than ever. Quite simply, there’s nothing on the Windows side of the fence that approaches the quality of iLife '06.

If you're unfamiliar with iLife, it's basically a complete and integrated suite of digital media tools that's available only for Mac OS X. In most cases, these applications are best-of-breed, meaning that there are no alternatives that come even close to combining the power, ease of use, and integration that the iLife applications provide. Apple iLife '06 adds one new application, so the entire suite breaks down as follows:

iMovie HD 6
Apple's movie-editing package is excellent, and the new version finally overcomes some previous limitations. For example, you can now open multiple projects simultaneously, each in its own iMovie window, and many video effects are finally rendered immediately. Apple iMovie has always provided excellent audio-editing tools, and although the previous version supported widescreen aspect ratios, version 6 adds native support for the video iPod.

iDVD 6There simply isn't a better consumer-oriented DVD-authoring application available on any platform, and iDVD 6 raises the bar with widescreen menu support, gorgeous new themes, a Magic DVD feature that automatically generates a completed DVD from content you specify, and, finally, support for third-party DVD burners. It's nearly perfect.

iPhoto 6
While iPhoto 6 is arguably outclassed by the free (and Windows-only) Google Picasa, the new version is the best yet, with support for more than 250,000 photos, full-screen photo editing, numerous effects, and a cool addition to its book-making functionality: You can now make (and order) greeting cards and calendars, as well.

iTunes 6
Although not technically part of iLife '06, iTunes was in previous iLife versions, and is available free from Apple's Web site. The latest version is the best yet, and it's my favorite music jukebox. iTunes 6 helps you create video iPod-compatible movies, and it's compatible with the iTunes Music Store's TV shows collection, which includes downloadable episodes of Lost, Battlestar Galactica, The Office, and other hit shows.

GarageBand 6
Originally launched as a music-making application, GarageBand has found a new calling in version 6, with a new focus on podcast creation. It's unclear whether this is any less nichy than its previous bent, but the suddenly ambidextrous GarageBand has proven to be a popular low-cost choice for people who need to create their own audio content.

iWeb
Apple's newest member of iLife is the least well realized, which makes sense since this is just the first version. Essentially a friendly Web site editor, iWeb integrates especially well with Apple's paid .Mac service, providing users with an easy way to post Web sites full of photos, videos, blogs, and even podcasts. It's not as easy to use with traditional Web servers, but it's a start.

What you can't get from this short overview is how well these applications integrate. If you want to make a movie from your photo collection, your iPhoto-based photos appear in iMovie. Likewise, you can do something similar from iDVD. Each of these applications can reach into the other applications' databases and extract content, as needed, in a similar and integrated fashion.

Best of all, iLife '06 is cheap. It comes free with any new Mac, but if you have a previous version, the full retail version is just $79, while a Family Pack, which lets you install the suite on as many as five Macs, is a bargain at $99. Why Microsoft can't duplicate this functionality—along with the low-ball pricing—is beyond me.

Apple's Intel-based iMac Is a Winner

1/31/2006 03:58:00 PM

"I've been using a new Intel-based Apple iMac since last week. I had been curious to see how the machine would compare to its predecessors, and I’m happy to say that the news is mostly quite good. Encased in the same case as its predecessor, the 20" widescreen iMac looks almost identical to the iMac G5 it replaces, albeit with one new exterior addition: a mini-DVI-out port, which, when combined with an external display, lets you extend the Mac desktop to two screens.

Inside, of course, the iMac is all new, with an Intel Core Duo processor, and Intel-based versions of Mac OS X 10.4.4, Front Row, and iLife '06. In day-to-day use, the iMac is virtually indistinguishable from its predecessor: The performance is snappy, especially in the Finder, the bundled applications, and iLife.

Some pieces are missing, however, and these exclusions could make Apple's Intel transition perilous in the short term for long-time Mac users. First, the Classic environment isn't available in the Intel version of Mac OS X; therefore, pre-OS X Mac applications will never run on the new machines. Second, higher-end Apple "pro" applications such as Final Cut Pro will need to be updated to Intel-based versions before they’ll work, and Apple is typically charging for the privilege. (My copy of Final Cut Express HD, for example, won’t run on the new iMac.)

Third, and perhaps most damaging—when you consider that the iMac is billed as a home computer—Mac games typically don't run well, particularly those that are designed for 3D video cards. I've tested DOOM 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Halo on the new iMac, and all of them ran so slowly that they were unplayable. (I eventually turned off virtually every graphical feature in Halo and ran it at the lowest possible resolution to achieve a semi-playable experience.) That said, game makers are working to provide Intel-compatible upgrades for the best-selling games, and of course new titles will likely be sold in the Universal Binary format, which lets Mac applications run equally well on Power PC- and Intel-based Macs. Aspyr pledges a free patch for Unreal Tournament 2004 that should be available any day.

One of the big questions about the Intel-based Macs is whether we'll be able to run Windows on the machines and dual-boot between, say, Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Hackers around the world are working on such solutions right now, and I have no doubt that we'll soon see the fruits of their labors. Indeed, I purchased the iMac with the notion that I'd soon be dual-booting between OS X and Windows Vista. When that happens, I'll discuss the details here in Connected Home Media.

Like its predecessor, the new iMac is available in 17" and 21" variants, at prices of $1299 and $1699, respectively. Those prices might seem a bit high compared to similar PCs, but remember that they include the roomy displays and a number of features that most PCs don’t include, such as FireWire, an 8X dual-layer DVD burner, an integrated VGA-quality Web camera, a remote control, and, of course, iLife '06. A fully equipped iMac can set you back north of $2000, but don't be misled: This is a high-quality machine with legs for the future. I highly recommend it, especially if you don't mind living on the edge for the next few months."

Intel Info and More

1/31/2006 12:38:00 PM

The buzz and brouhaha over the Intel transition continues. Depending upon whom you ask, there are as of this morning either 425 or 518 Universal Binary applications available -- or, as Apple has started calling them, simply Universal Applications. Meanwhile, MacInTouch's Macs on Intel forum is abuzz with reader reports, and that site has added a Rosetta Compatibility list. O'Grady's PowerPage brings the good news that Intel chips are socketed in the new Mactel iMacs, and Ars Technica weighs in on the debate about whether Intel Macs will be better targets for virus writers, as does eWEEK. In other news: Google is busy these days, not only kowtowing to Chinese censors, but also pondering a partnership with -- or even a takeover of -- Napster and working on a Linux-based OS to challenge Microsoft. Also, Motorola has released a new phone that'll run an iTunes client, Bono and Apple may be entering into a deal that'll result in a red iPod, Kodak is now selling more digital products than film-based ones, one analyst predicts a bright future for Apple (along with a 1GB iPod nano), rumors are swirling that Apple will rename the Power Mac line as "Mac Pro," the ongoing Steve Jobs praise-fest is alive and well, and Engadget has tracked down the perfect mouse for your Mac. What The Hell's An Accelerometer?

1/27/2006 12:08:00 PM

Beats us, but Macsimum News reports that Apple's building a tablet Mac based on one, but it looks more like an Etch-A-Sketch to us. Leave it to Steve to make some kind of iSketcher - that's what icons do. Which reminds us, have you thanked Steve today? You should. Meanwhile, we apparently lost the bet that Apple would pioneer next-generation wireless networking like it did with AirPort all those years ago. Wired News says it's as good as here, but some buzzkills say it won't be ready for primetime until 2007, dagnabbit. Speaking of primetime, it wouldn't be Friday without a little David Hasselhoff. Ok, alright, we know you need your Apple juice for the weekend - here's a hard look at the good ol' Finder, dubbed notoriouseasily hack our Macs; or that there could be undiscovered vulnerabilities that have been brewing for ten years under OS X's hood - duh, yeah, prolly. As long as we're taking time to smell the FUD, budabadabdabadaba, that's all folks! [ Full story from MacAddict 10.4 ]

Tiny Toons

1/26/2006 12:08:00 PM

If you've visited the iTunes Music Store today, you've no doubt noticed a slew of new video content from MTV, MTV2, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and The N -- episodes of South Park, Dora the Explorer, Beavis and Butthead, and a bunch more are now available for your 'Podding pleasure. Meanwhile, Business Week has a bit of interesting newsy analysis on how Steve Jobs could revitalize the Magic Kingdom. But before you bow down at the altar of Apple, one Wired columnist doesn't think Steve Jobs is worthy of idol worship -- in fact, he calls him "a single-minded capitalist, seemingly oblivious to the broader needs of society." Double meanwhile, Intel claims that it's successfully created a chip using a 45-nanometer process -- and if you're wondering just what the heck that means, check out our March issue ("Intel 101," p17). Triple meanwhile, is Mac OS X riddled with 10-year-old bugs just waiting to be maliciously hacked? Quadruple meanwhile, if you're a gamer still wondering what to expect in the Intel era, check out this status report. And speaking of games, we thought we should pass along this warning to anyone planning on exhibiting at E3 this year: Booth babes will no longer be welcome. Clad scantily at your own risk. Content and More Content

1/25/2006 12:51:00 PM

We've been celebrating the Mac's birthday all week, today with a visit to the Stanford library's online exhibit devoted to "Making the Macintosh." One Mac fan wants to make his Macintosh boot into Windows XP--and he's offering a reward (which now stands at $5747) to the person who can tell him how. Over in England, the supermarket chain Tesco has put an all-Apple department in one of its stores--the first time the company's dedicated part of a store to a non-food brand--and is considering doing the same in other locations. You've probably heard that the government wants to know what you've been searching for--and Microsoft has explained what info they supplied and why. Apple has launched iTunes U, a way for colleges and universities to host course material and make it available through the ITMS. That's one way to get content onto your video iPod--another is the Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder 2, which records video (from TV, VCR, wherever) to a memory card, from which you can transfer it to your Mac and thence your 'Pod. Or, you can go to ivideoblast.com and check out their new video podcasts and "vlogs." Still got room? Add some Disney animated shorts from the iTunes Music Store. And if that all sounds like too much work, you can buy a preloaded iPod from eBay--at least until the copyright police decide it's a no-no. Finally, how hip is Symantec? Hip enough to rap, dawg! 12 rising stars in Corporate America

1/24/2006 02:56:00 PM

The master of disruption is at it again. With his two remarkable companies -- Apple Computer and animated movie house Pixar -- dominating the headlines, Steve Jobs finds himself in the kind of position that most mad-genius tech wunderkinds can only fantasize about: thrilling consumers while wreaking havoc in multiple industries. Apple sold 100 iPods a minute in the fourth quarter, and its iTunes Music Store could account for 10% of all music sales in the U.S. this year. It's only fitting that the release in mid-January of a new line of superfast Mac computers featuring Intel chips came just as Apple's market cap briefly passed that of rival Dell. The company turns 30 on April 1. Happy birthday, Apple. [ Full story from CNNMoney.com ]

Happy 22nd Birthday, Mac!

1/24/2006 12:51:00 PM

Yes, it's been 22 years since Super Bowl XVIII, during which the now-famous 1984 commercial aired. Created by director Ridley Scott (fresh from his 1982 success with Blade Runner), this ad introduced us all to the machine that has obsessed us these two-and-twenty years. So take a moment and give thanks to the creators of the Mac, and bask in a few memories of that blessed day. Speaking of commercials, remember the kerfuffle that surrounded the Eminem iPod ad, which was close enough to a Lugz shoes ad to inspire parodies? Well, it appears that Apple has yet another similarities emergency on its hands -- check out this comparison of its latest ad with a music video from The Postal Service. In other news: Think Secret reports that initial Wintel Macs aren't flying off the shelves. If you do happen to be one of the few, the proud, the early adopters, you probably already know that Rosetta can be a RAM hog, and you should know that Mac on Intel is warning you against trying to boot Windows Vista on your new Wintel unit by messing with that machine's extensible firmware interface -- you may end up with one decidedly unhappy Mac. In happier news, iPhoto 6's smart albums are smarter than ever, the list of Universal Binary apps keeps getting longer and longer, the iTunes Music Store is kicking serious butt while scaring its competitors, Apple's iWork is officially the (distant) number-one competitor to Microsoft Office, IBM's Lotus Notes is now Mac OS X-compatible, yet another pundit credits the iPod with revolutionizing the consumer-electronics industry, yet another yet-another-pundit credits Apple with kick-starting the digital living room (sorry, Bill), and we've tracked down the world's cutest (if impractical) iPod cases. Universals Roll Out

IDC: Apple Mac 2005 U.S. market share 4% on 32% growth year over year

1/20/2006 10:51:00 AM

The PC market continued to expand at an impressive rate in the fourth quarter of 2005 with worldwide shipments increasing by more than 17% year on year, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Although shipments in North America were incrementally behind forecasts, international markets were able to pick up the slack to produce the third consecutive quarter of growth greater than 17%. Portable PC demand also remained a major driver that should contribute to revenue as well as shipment growth. Fourth quarter shipments of 61.1 million were up 17.1% boosting full year shipments to 208.6 million with growth of 16.4%. The figures were slightly ahead of November projections of 15.1% growth in Q4 and 15.8% for the year.

"Despite market concern for consumer spending, fourth quarter demand remained strong with most regions coming in ahead of expectations," said Loren Loverde, director of IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker in the press release. "Although growth has declined slightly from the second and third quarters, the market’s resilience in the face of rising interest rates, high fuel prices, a weaker Euro, and other potential inhibitors puts the market in a great position to start 2006."

"The market continues a fundamental shift toward mobile computing that is contributing significantly to top-line growth,” said David Daoud, research manager Personal Computing and PC Tracker Programs in the release. “Portable PCs are expected to capture a record 38% of Client PC shipments in the United States this quarter, while incentive strategies for Desktops based on low prices alone may have reached their limits. Still, there were ample opportunities in the fourth quarter for vendors who offered desktops as home digital appliances, a trend we anticipate could reignite the desktop market in 2006 and 2007 with the launch of Microsoft Vista, Intel's Viiv, and PC vendors' expected endorsement of these initiatives."

Regional Outlook
•United States – Demand for Portable PCs continued to drive solid growth in the U.S. market during the fourth quarter. Consumer demand remained strong despite competition from other electronics and concerns that hurricane damage as well as rising interest rates and fuel prices would reduce spending. In fact, demand for desktops was relatively slow as buyers preferred portable systems despite their higher cost.
•EMEA – The EMEA market turned in another outstanding performance during the final quarter of the year with strong retail sales and a particularly strong December. Portable adoption remained a key factor throughout the region while business investment also contributed significantly to growth within CEMA.
•Japan – Persistent consumer demand helped sustain momentum in the Japanese market. Overall growth declined slightly from the double-digit rates in the second and third quarters as expected but remained in high single-digits.
Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) – PC shipments in the APeJ region continued to expand at a rapid pace in the fourth quarter. A slowdown in commercial growth in India was only a small blemish on the region’s performance as steady growth in China and South Korea as well as strong portable adoption in many countries highlighted solid demand throughout the region.

Vendor Highlights
• Dell – Dell remained the top PC vendor and boosted its share of shipments to 17.2% from 16.8% a year ago with year-on-year growth of more than 20%. The company had strong growth across regions and form factors with particularly rapid growth in EMEA, Asia/Pacific, and Latin America driving overall international growth above 37% year on year and growth of more than 50% in worldwide Portable PC shipments.
• HP – HP also had a solid quarter with 15.7% of worldwide shipments and growth of 15.8% year on year. Growth in EMEA accelerated to almost 25% in 4Q05 from single-digits in the first quarter while operations in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) continued to expand at more than 30% year on year.
• Lenovo – Lenovo continues to gain momentum as it tunes its operations following the acquisition of IBM’s PC business. Worldwide shipment growth stabilized at nearly 13% vs. combined Lenovo and IBM PC shipments in the fourth quarter with growth of 30% in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) boosting the region to roughly 55% of shipments.
• Acer – Acer maintained growth of more than 50% for the third consecutive quarter with strong international gains and a growing presence in the Americas. Nevertheless, growth declined from prior quarters as competitors offered competitively priced systems.
• Fujitsu/Fujitsu Siemens – Another strong quarter in EMEA and improving growth in Japan helped build momentum for Fujitsu Seimens. The fourth quarter marked the fifth consecutive period that the company has improved year-on-year growth.
• Gateway – Gateway delivered a third quarter of healthy growth with gains in the United States helping worldwide volume keep pace with market growth. Although the 16% year-on-year increase declined notably from the high 20% range of recent quarters, this may reflect channel inventory management with new distribution partners.
• Apple – Apple continued to grow in double-digits, but growth slowed notably from recent quarters. The buzz over its media business continues to generate significant attention for Apple platforms and while the recent announcement of Intel based systems should contribute to interest in Apple’s systems, they may have contributed to slower growth in the fourth quarter.
