New Adventures in HiFi

2/28/2006 11:57:00 AM

At a cozy little press conference in Cupertino, California this morning, Steve Jobs unveiled a few of those "fun new products" we've been hearing so much about lately. The first: An Intel-based Mac mini. The new $599 mini comes standard with an Intel Core Solo -- a single-core sibling to the Core Duo found in the iMac and MacBook Pro -- but a Core Duo version is available for $799. Both minis come loaded with Apple's Front Row media software (now Bonjour-enabled so you can stream your movies and music from other Macs) and iLife '06. Fun new product number two: iPod HiFi, a super-simple 17-by-6.6-6.9-inch box with speakers inside; a Universal Dock sits on top so you can plug in an iPod and listen to your tunes. The HiFi costs $349. Fun new product number three: lovely new leather cases for the iPod nano and fifth-gen iPod. See? Fun! Meanwhile, the San Francisco Chronicle chimes in today about the rumored Disney-Apple merger, which cites many experts "pooh-pooh"-ing the idea as "absurd". And in light of the recent Mac virus "scare," one security analyst says that security companies tend to overhype security issues in order to make money. Whoa, who woulda thought? Oh, and in case you were ever wondering what the iPod's signature packaging would have looked like if it were designed by Microsoft, wonder no more. [ Full story from MacAddict 10.4 ]

Another "analyst" makes a name for himself on sheer speculation; this time, the idea of Apple buying Disney is the fodder. Sure, it seems more feasible this time, more feasible than the Apple-buying-Tivo, Apple-buying-Motorola, or Apple-buying-"troubled company of the day" speculation that has been bandied about in the past. But of all the Apple buyout rumors you've heard (and there have been many), how many came true? Remember, these folks are just floating ideas based on some creative dot connecting. But hey, some of you just love speculation, so you're probably reveling in the swirls of rumors about tomorrow's Apple event. What will be announced tomorrow? Movie downloads? An iPod video? Intel Mac mini? Intel iBook? Your guess is as good as ours. One we know for sure about tomorrow: There won't be anyone from Uphold Our Heritage at the event. Speaking of Intel Macs, if you forgot why Apple switched to Intel, refresh your memory. Remember those comments Woz made about Apple/Intel and the iPod? Apparently, Woz claims he was misquoted. At PMA 2006, Apple unveiled Aperture 1.1, which features improved RAW processing, a new color meter, performance enhancements, and more. Apple also recently bought a "mothballed" data center for $50 million. And finally, "technology enthusiast" Thomas Hawk thinks that anyone who shops at the iTunes Music Store is a sucker. If you can get past Hawk's condescending attitude—and remember that Hawk is more against DRM in general than iTMS—then Hawk's thoughts are something to chew on. [ Full story from MacAddict 10.4 ]

Happy Birthday, Steve!

2/24/2006 12:14:00 PM

Steve Jobs turns 51 today -- time for a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday to You." We thought of sending him an iPod nano tie, but it probably wouldn't go well with his trademark black turtleneck -- though we think he might consider upgrading his look. And although he's had an amazing run at the Apple's helm, there have been a few bumps along the way. In other news: Google has released a trio of Google-specific Dashboard widgets, the MacBook Pro appears to be only a wee bit less toasty than the PowerBook G4, the Web continues to buzz about the recent Mac OS X malware brouhaha, Amazon.com's planned entry into the music-download biz doesn't worry one pro-Apple analyst, the iPod is big in Japan, and the rumor mill is grinding away with rumors about what'll be launched at next Tuesday's exclusive "fun product" unveiling -- full-length movies from the iTunes Music Store, perhaps? Over 1,000,000,000 Served

2/23/2006 10:45:00 AM

It finally happened just after 9:30 PM (Pacific Time) in West Bloomfield, Michigan: The one-billionth song was downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. So what was the magic iTune? The suspiciously innocuous “Speed of Sound? by Coldplay. We were hoping for something a little more scandalous, but oh well -- at least it wasn’t U2. Fortune has released its list of America's Most Admired Companies, and Apple ranks at number 11 overall, just beneath Microsoft, and at number 2 in the computer-only category, just beneath IBM. Meanwhile, spies from Rumorland report that Mac OS 10.4.6 has shown up in the hands of developers, and it’s said to contain updates for OpenGL, AppleScript, and Safari (to address hang-up issues). Speaking of rumors, the rumorific rumblings about what Apple could be announcing next week continue unchecked. If you’re in the market for a new PowerBook battery, NewerTech just announced a longer-lasting 12-inch PowerBook battery replacement. And finally: Toronto’s Globe and Mail had a brief encounter with Steve Wozniak, who waxed poetically on the state of Apple while playing polo on Segway scooters in New Zealand. Is Intel inside Apple's Mac mini?

2/23/2006 08:02:00 AM

Under Steve Jobs, Apple has mastered the twin arts of keeping inventories lean and keeping new products under wraps. But sometimes these talents work at cross purposes, since shortages of old products are a tell-tale sign that new products are on the way. Brian at FreeMacBlog tried to place a large order of Mac minis, only to be told that Apple wasn't taking bulk orders for the compact computers at this time. Could Apple be running down its Mac mini inventory in advance of a product announcement scheduled for February 28? If so, it's likely that Apple is putting Intel chips in the Mac mini, too. An Invitation and a Warning

2/21/2006 11:20:00 AM

So, what should appear in our emailboxes this morning but an invitation to an Apple-sponsored event next Tuesday at the Apple Town Hall at the company's Cupertino campus. A quick phone call with Apple revealed no hints (now there's a surprise), but the invitation referred to "fun new products from Apple." We'll all find out next week, but between now and then, expect the rumor mills to be bustling -- such as this rumor about LCD-based function keys on the new MacBook Pro. On a more serious note, launch Safari, go to Safari > Preferences > General, and uncheck the box next to Open "Safe" Files After Downloading. It seems that there's a security flaw in Safari that can allow nasty folks to harm the contents of your Mac. As you read this, Apple is likely working on a patch, which -- according to Ars Technica -- should be an easy fix. Speaking of Ars, they -- like many of us Apple-watchers -- are of the opinion that the Leap-A trojan is no big deal. (Unfortunately, they also used their report as an opportunity to remind us of the unfortunate 1998 AutoStart 9805 Worm incident; we're still blushing about that one.) In any case, check out BusinessWeek's summary of the latest Mac malware episodes -- and remember, as Douglas Adams used to say, "Don't Panic!" In other news: It appears that Intel may soon cut prices on the Core Duo chips in the new iMac Core Duo and MacBook Pro -- oh, and they've also announced a new manufacturing technology to make microprocessors smaller, faster, cooler, and less power-hungry. Finally, one analyst says there's far too much FUD affecting the market's current bearishness regarding Apple, and you can now download such gems as America's Funniest Home Videos from the iTunes Music Store. The American culture continues its steady decline. [ Full story from MacAddict 10.4 ]
