Apple Computer's switch to Intel CPUs for its new desktops and laptops brought up a fascinating question: Can the Intel-based Macs run Windows operating systems and software natively? Indeed they can, thanks to the beta release of Boot Camp, a free dual-boot enabler designed to let users install Windows XP on Intel-based Macs. [

We were pretty jazzed to hear about Google SketchUp yesterday, but
Jason pointed out that there's no Mac version yet. Chop chop Google - it looks
pretty cool. At least we don't have to worry about Apple buying
that juggernaut - as Disney's fattest shareholder, Steve Jobs seems like a natural new boss for Mickey and friends, but Jobs apparently
doesn't see himself in that role,
but he didn't say no, either. Remember his current Apple run started out as 'interim CEO' so many years ago; remember this
Wired interview from 1996, a year before he took the big promotion to the best-paying buck-a-year gig ever? Hey, is your iPod sounding funky, or maybe not funky enough? Here's a
rather elaborate discussion of the onboard equalizer and how to make the best of it - maybe. Oh, and if you missed that Macexpo in Amsterdam this week, here's a
photo gallery. Meanwhile, who knew there was
software for running tanning salons - much less that it runs on Macs? Finally, for some thick weekend reading, Robert X Cringely speculates on Apple's upcoming chance to
eat Microsoft's lunch when Vista arrives as just another elaborate XP patch; even his
buy Adobe rap makes sense in light of the Aperture team's apparent demise. [

Since the legendary 1984 TV commercial that launched its first Macintosh, maverick Apple has prided itself on humanizing personal computing. However, its latest innovation may prove disconcerting to fans: It's a flat-panel LCD screen that can record video as well as display it. New Scientist calls the idea "clever" : Apple has patented a way to insert tiny image sensors in between the LCD cells of a flat-panel monitor. But over on Slashdot, one reader is understandably flustered: "What you're telling me is that Apple is NOT really the enemy of Big Brother, but Big Brother in disguise? I'm so confused. How can there be so many truths?" [

Apple has announced it will soon be allowing folks who purchase a new Mac to
recycle their old computers for free, putting the Cupertino company more in line environmentally with other major computer companies such as HP and Dell. But Wired says that some folks are saying
the new program's not enough, and that Apple still has a lot of catching up to do to be truly considered green. In the meantime, there's lots of other little Apple news:
iWork '06 owners may have noticed a few new updates to Keynote and Pages. The 2006
Apple Design Awards are now open for business -- so if you've got a product that you think Apple would be proud of, now's your chance to show it off. Meanwhile, what's going on behind the Cupertino curtain? Think Secret is reporting an
Aperture shake-up, claiming that the development team has been forced into an early retirement. And what's the story behind the impending name change of iPod Garage to
iProng?
Gizmondo smells lawyers. At the same time, eWeek is speculating about what the
recent departure of two major figures within Apple really means for the company's future. In other news: Google is releasing a free version if its 3D modeling app
SketchUp, fulfilling the company's "long-time vision of making 3D accessible to everyone a reality." The nerds at Geek.com put Parallels and Boot Camp in a
head-to-head competition to determine which runs Windows XP apps faster. And hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement of the first 750GB desktop hard drive, Seagate has unveiled a
750GB FireWire drive. Externalize. [

When Apple signed on to support Sony's controversial Blu-Ray videodisc initiative, it gave the embattled format a boost in the marketplace. But now Steve Jobs' quid pro quo is becoming clear. Rumor has it that he's asking Sony and other studios to include iPod-ready versions of their movies on Blu-Ray releases. Disney, which has worked closely with Apple on video content in the past, is also in the Blu-Ray camp. Persuading Sony and Disney to add iPod support would greatly expand Apple's movie library from the one title it sells today, Disney's "High School Musical." Since Blu-Ray discs are much more capacious than DVDs, it shouldn't be a technical problem to store a much smaller iPod version of a movie alongside the full, high-definition version. The Slashfilm movie blog points out that Apple would be giving up revenues it could realize by selling those movies through the iTunes Music Store - but that having more iPod-ready movies available would help Apple sell more of the devices. Court is back in session for
Apple vs. the Trade-Secret Leakers, and at least one Motley Fool is criticizing Apple for
"still not thinking different" when it comes to how information is exchanged in these crazy modern times. Speaking of rumors, the latest one is that Apple has been meeting with the Big Studios behind closed doors to get
iPod-ready video content onto upcoming Blu-ray movie releases. Lawsuit in three ... two ... It's switchin' season, and ExtremeTech has a
Switcher's Guide to Windows/OS X that takes a look at both sides of the Boot Camp coin. And if you're wondering if this operating-system synergy is really worth all this fuss, take a peek at this article from
two years in the future about the effect Boot Camp had on the Mac market. And don't worry if your boss catches you reading the article when you should be working -- a judge has declared that
it's perfectly legal to surf the Web on the company dime. Some nuggets of gaming goodness for you: The Mac version of Call of Duty 2 is now in beta, putting it on track for its May shipping date. Indie space strategy game
Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space is now available for your Mac downloading pleasure. And don't expect any more
America's Army games for the Mac -- the U.S. Army-sponsored shooter has been cancelled. In other news:
Time has named its Gadget of the Week, and it's the
DLO HomeDock Deluxe for iPods. If your music and video collection is getting out of hand, you might want to take a look at Seagate's new
750GB hard drive, built on that newfangled perpendicular recording technology. There's apparently another
Safari flaw out there, one that causes OS X to display the Spinning Rainbow Cursor of Death (aka S.R.C.O.D.). Here's a little something for
that one guy who wrote that letter asking us about slide scanning. And sometimes the tiniest news piece is secretly the biggest -- so could Apple's rumored dumping of
Quanta Computer as a video iPod manufacturer really just be a smokescreen for a dark conspiracy of earth-staggering importance? We're guessing it all points to
S.W.I.F.T. in the end. [

Ah, the rumor mill -- what a boring life we'd all lead without it. Today's grist includes
Apple adding ads to iTunes, the addition of
whiteboarding to the next version of iChat AV, a handful of
new Apple patents, a
redesigned iPod nano coming out this fall, Apple's new 50-acre Cupertino campus
costing up to $500 million, and souped-up cell phones
slicing into iPod sales. While rumors are all well, good, and entertaining, actual
events have their place, as well -- such as upgrades to
GarageBand and
Xsan; Intel's announcement of its new
VPro technology, which will add
remote management and hardware virtualization to future Intel-based desktop machines; and knockoffs of the iPod nano "
flying off the shelves" in Taiwan.
In other news: One analyst cites online data to prove that there's still
plenty of love for the Apple brand, another states that there's
plenty of money to be made in iPod accessories (we could have told you that), a third avers that Microsoft's upcoming Vista OS will be considered great
only because Windows XP sucks so royally, and you can get a
free ice cream cone today at your local Ben & Jerry's. Make ours
New York Super Fudge Chunk. [

The crusade to win a greater share of the operating system market away from Microsoft's Windows has long fired up the hearts of the Mac and Linux faithful. But popularity breeds contempt - from hackers. A new study of "malware" - viruses, worms, and other software nasties - released Friday by Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab shows a doubling in the number of viruses and worms targeting Linux from 2004 to 2005. The trend is worth watching, says Linux Pipeline, but must be put in context. There were only 863 cases of Linux attacks last year, while Symantec found 11,000 viruses and worms in Windows. And Apple's Mac? It got off easy in the Kaspersky report, but last week brought news of vulnerabilities in OS X. Additionally, independent security researcher Tom Ferris posted to his blog a series of "serious" Mac security breaches that he recently discovered. [

A European Union judge questioned on Tuesday whether Microsoft's bundling of its media player with its Windows system, a move the European Commission deemed illegal, really worried consumers and computer makers.
The judge, one of a 13-strong panel at Europe's Court of First Instance, also asked sharp questions of the software company, which is battling a Commission decision that it muscled out rivals by abusing its near monopoly of Windows.
A court ruling against the Commission would curtail its power as Europe's competition watchdog and allow Microsoft to pursue the business practices that have helped it become a household name around the world.
In the second day of the five-day hearing, Judge John Cooke -- who is due to write the draft judgment -- looked into Microsoft's defense that consumers benefited from an improved Windows operating system.
"Does the OEM (original equipment manufacturer, or PC maker) really care?" he asked the Commission's lawyer, Per Hellstrom. "Is there any reality to saying a choice is being imposed?"
He remarked that it was probably impossible for non-smokers to buy cars without a cigarette lighter installed, though did not explicitly compare this example of an inconspicuous tie-in to Microsoft's bundling.
The Commission argues that by this bundling with Windows, which runs on 95 percent of the world's computers, consumers' incentive to buy other media players such as RealNetworks' RealPlayer or Apple's QuickTime is killed off.
"They (consumers) are less likely to choose other media players because they already have one," Hellstrom answered the judge. Continue at source

Apple released a
17-inch MacBook Pro. It comes with a 2.16GHz Intel Cor Duo processor, 1GB RAM, a 120GB hard drive, an 8x double-layer SuperDrive, and a 1,680 by 1,050 native screen resolution. We're sure there are several IT professionals who'd love to get their hands on one, especially since there are
a few good reasons IT pros can use to switch their companies to Macs. Though we're sure IT pros aren't alone in their concern about the
five security vulnerabilities in Mac OS X [free resgistration required], which can be avoided by "not visit untrusted websites or open ZIP archives or images originating from untrusted sources" until Apple releases a fix. Rumor has it that Steve Jobs has won his
game of chicken with the music companies, and that you won't see variable pricing in the ITunes Music Store in the near future. Another rumor says that
Apple will allow advertising in the iTMS. Yet another rumor, this one started by an analyst, says that
8GB and 10GB iPod nanos will be available this summer. If you happen to be in Paris, Frances September 12 to September 26, you can go to
Apple Expo (no word on who's giving the keynote speech). The folks at OWC have figured out how to
boot Intel and PowerPC Macs from the same external hard drive.
In other news: The
RIAA is suing a family that doesn't own a computer for illegally sharing music. China is close to being the
world's top spammer. And finally, check out some of the
odd inventions from the recent Maker Faire. [

"Are Computers Destroying The Earth?" drum - Apple's thumping in with a new
recycling scheme that gives users free shipping and 'environmentally friendly disposal' of old Macs - all you gotta do is buy a new Mac to qualify. Even if there's not a new Mac in your near future, check out the
Apple And The Environment page - how else will you find out in what year Apple quit using tetrabisphenol in its plastics? High-five for that, if only we knew yesterday was
National High Five Day here in the states - and no, we didn't miss it because of that other
holiday - we just got a little dazed and confused reading Robert X Cringely's latest, a
long, hard look at Mac OS X's Kernel and its future. [

Several Apple resellers are marketing Intel-based Mac desktops and portables with Windows XP pre-installed, but Apple Computer Inc. reiterated that it has no intention of following their lead.
The resellers, which include a small Utah-based company and a major California computer online warehouse, are bundling Windows XP with standard Macintosh models, and pre-installing the Microsoft operating system using the Boot Camp dual-boot application that Apple released earlier this month.
ExperCom is touting a $2,029 MacBook Pro with Windows XP Home pre-loaded; the price is just $35 above the Apple price for the portable. Meanwhile, ClubMac.com, MacMall.com, and OnSale.com -- all three part of Torrance, Calif.-based PC Mall -- list MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini machines with XP Home or XP Professional installed. Windows XP Home bumps up the usual price of the computer by $100, while XP Professional costs an additional $150.
Retail prices for Windows XP Home are in the $190-198 range.
A sales representative from MacMall told TechWeb that users can select the size of the disk partition assigned to Windows XP during the ordering process.
But there are limits to what the resellers will do. "We don't support Windows XP - and neither does Apple," ExperCom said on its site. "We'll install it for you, but, hey, we're Mac people, so we can't help answer Windows questions!" Lengthy disclaimers, primarily about Boot Camp's beta status, also appeared on the ClubMac, MacMall, and OnSale sites.
