Paris Hilton and the Playboy Mansion on iTunes

7/28/2006 08:06:00 AM

E! Entertainment Television has announced that it, too, has entered a deal with Apple Computer to offer select shows for download on its iTunes store. Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton's show, "The Simple Life: 'Til Death Do Us Part," as well as Hugh Hefner's behind-the-scenes look at Playboy Mansion life in "The Girls Next Door," will be available for $1.99 per download. "The Soup," E!'s celebrity news and pop-culture mash-up, and plastic-surgery reality program "Dr. 90210," are also available.

Several networks have begun to make current television shows, as well as dusty old favorites, available on the popular online store. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. released the entire 113-episode collection of "Friends." While television networks have been eager to join the new revenue generator, Hollywood has been reluctant to let go of the stepped-window release paradigm for movies. Only recently are studios beginning to release films online to sites like BitTorrent, Guba and Wurld Media. There have been hints that Apple is developing an online movie store.

Power Outage Hits London Apple Store

7/27/2006 12:17:00 PM

LONDON -- The Regent Street Apple Store in London was without power for a little more than three hours Thursday after a series of rolling blackouts hit part of central London.

Power went out at the store 10 minutes before it was set to open at 10:00 AM local time and wasn't restored until earlier afternoon, customers told TMO. As crowds formed outside its large glass doors, store management decided to open the store in the dark, with only iPods and laptops operational for customers to play with.

Support staff formed a makeshift Genius Bar on the first floor of the London store to help customers as best as they could without power, fulfilling standing Genius Bar appointments. As for selling products, checkout counter employees were selling products by hand with the help of sunlight coming through store windows with no computers and no accurate way to verify credit card purchases. Power reportedly was restored between 1 and 2:00 PM, local time.

The scene was reminiscent of the opening of Apple's SoHo store in New York City after a blackout in August of 2003 that left some 800,000 people in the Big Apple without power and struck simultaneously across dozens of cities in the eastern United States and Canada. Then, the SoHo store opened for business, despite having no power or lights.

Apple's power outage was just part of a wider power shortage in London's West End. UK power company EDF told the BBC that a series of rolling blackouts and other shortages was caused by four equipment failures exacerbated by unseasonably hot weather and the accompanying higher demand for air conditioning.

Intel Launches Core 2 Duo Processor, Cuts Prices of Older Ones

7/27/2006 10:29:00 AM

Intel on Thursday officially introduced its new Core 2 Duo processor, which is widely expected to find its way into the Intel-based Power Mac successor that Apple will likely announce at next month's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

The Core 2 Duo launch has been billed as Intel’s most significant since the introduction of the original Pentium processor in 1993. The introduction comes at a crucial moment. Intel executives have watched AMD expand its share of the processor market in recent quarters and they want to reclaim this lost ground.

Intel marked down the price of its Intel Pentium D processor, the 960 that runs at 3.6GHz, to US$316, down 40 percent from $530 in early June, according to a new price list published Thursday on its Web site.

On Monday, AMD pared prices on a number of its desktop chips and some laptops. It cut the price of its dual-core Athlon 64 X2 5000+ to US$301 from $696 in May. It also cut the price of the Athlon 64 X2 4600+ by 57 percent to $240 from $558.
