The Great Battery Recall of 2006

10/31/2006 04:14:00 PM

Last week, a Japanese user of a Fujitsu notebook suffered minor burns to his hand when the computer's battery sparked.

That particular battery model was already included in a global recall of more than nine million Sony-made batteries by computer makers Apple, Dell, Fujitsu, Gateway, Toshiba, and others -- a recall that is costing Sony upwards of $430 million, according to the company's own estimate.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which tracks product recalls on behalf of the public, there have been 16 reports of notebook computer batteries causing "minor property damage" or "minor burns" when they overheated.

All Fuss, No Fury?

According to Carmi Levy, senior analyst with the Info-Tech Research Group, the recalls will hurt Sony and its partners in the near future, but not in the long run. "Every vendor that's involved has taken and continues to take a hit to its reputation, in terms of its ability to deliver safe product to the market," said Levy.

But, he added, time heals all wounds -- at least for big-name computer vendors. "Five years from now, Dell will still be a major player in the hardware space. Sony will still be a major supplier of components to Dell, to Fujitsu, to others," said Levy. "Nobody is going to stay awake at night worrying about that big battery recall from 2006."

Info-Tech rang the bell over faulty batteries as early as this spring in a press release that called attention to a growing number of recalls and design issues. "We were called alarmists, fearmongers," said Levy. "The term 'chicken little' was bandied about on at least one occasion."

But in August, Dell announced a major recall, noting that certain Sony batteries could, in rare conditions, overheat, spark, and catch fire. Sony has since claimed that a combination of design and production flaws... [ Full story from CRM Daily ]

Analyst Questions Microsoft's New Antipiracy Strategy

10/31/2006 03:38:00 PM

Like any industry expert, Joseph Wilcox, a senior analyst at Jupiter Research, says that piracy, which is a polite term for stealing, has cost the software industry billions of dollars in lost sales. Software makers have a right to protect their property, he says.

But Wilcox openly questions antipiracy tactics that, according to him, are crossing the line. The latest antipiracy tactic to attract attention? Microsoft's Office Genuine Advantage program.

Office Genuine Advantage, a cousin of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage, has been in beta testing for several months. As of last Friday, Office users who download templates or add-ons through Microsoft's Web site will undergo a check to validate their copy of Office.

Starting in January of 2007, Office users who update their software using the Office Update service will face a similar validation check. If their software fails the test, it will be shut out of all updates except those labeled "critical."

Where's the Advantage?

Customers who legally bought Office but fail the piracy check will be able to use their software, providing they prove their case to Microsoft with a proof of purchase, the fake CDs they bought, and other documents.

"Microsoft isn't just trying to fight piracy with a stick," said Wilcox. "It's also trying to do it with a carrot -- to convince people they should have genuine software because it has benefits."

But Wilcox said he is not convinced the new antipiracy efforts for Office will work to Microsoft's advantage.

"A benefit is something you add, and not something you take away and call a benefit after the fact," said Wilcox. The Office Genuine Advantage program is "taking stuff they gave away for free and now putting it behind a wall."

More Harm than Good?

According to the Business Software Alliance, which counts Microsoft, Adobe, and Apple among its members, piracy cost the software industry... [ Full story from CRM Daily ]

Adobe Soundbooth Debuts for Web Pros

10/31/2006 03:02:00 PM

Adobe announced a free public beta version of its new Soundbooth software for Intel-based Mac and Windows computers this week, at Adobe's MAX 2006 user conference in Las Vegas. The new sound-editing program is aimed at Web designers and video pros who need to blend voice and sound into their work, but don't see themselves as experts in high-end audio production.

The company is positioning Soundbooth as an alternative to Adobe Audition, which is already well-known among audio professionals in broadcast journalism and production fields where complete control over sound is almost always essential.

In contrast, Soundbooth is aimed at mid-range production staff who must grapple with sound as part of their Web design projects when they entail voiceovers, background music, and custom soundtracks. Sample applications include Flash projects for Web sites, e-learning, and kiosks.

"Its features are focused on the tasks and problems we face regularly," said Matt Rodriguez, president of design firm Plexipixel, in a statement.

"Having designers who can do their own audio work will save us time everyday," he added.

More for the Average Joe

While Soundbooth lacks some of Audition's tune-and-tweak features, it still packs enough punch for the day-to-day audio work that designers, Web and video alike, are called on to perform.

For instance, Soundbooth can build and edit sounds, de-noise scratchy tracks, tweak voiceovers, sharpen and shape music, fade and stretch tracks, and add special effects.

But the interface is more task-based and less tool-based than Audition, which, according to Adobe, will remain the choice of audio production pros. Still, if Soundbooth can simplify complex audio tasks for Web designers and video artists, it could be music to their ears.

Stepping In for Big Brother

Soundbooth will replace Audition as a standard component of Adobe's Production Studio, a post-production solution that includes Adobe After Effects, Premier, and Encore DVD, among others.

Soundbooth... [ Full story from CRM Daily ]
