Is that a Mac Mini over there running OS X complete with UI? Nope, it's an Apple TV, modded by semthex from Hackint0sh.org. According to this AppleTV Hacks post, Semthex wrote a processor emulation for the kernel that works around Apple TV's hardware restrictions. AppleTVHacks has a complete set of instructions in case you want to try this out yourself.

We all knew it was just a matter of time until someone figured out how to run a full blown version of OS X on an Apple TV, but who'd a guessed it would only take eight days? Semthex from hackint0sh has wrote a "processor emulation for the kernel", which was necessary to "sidestep" Apple's hardware locks. Semthex's only problem was he didn't have an Apple TV, so with some help from Apple TV Hacks, they recruited some testers and a day later they were in business. This effectively creates the least expensive Mac ever made -- at $299 -- and with a better video card than a mini to boot. While we doubt anyone will want to use a computer with only 256 MB of RAM as their main machine, MythTV frontends and other media centric applications should run nicely. PowerMax sells Apple TV with pre-upgraded 120GB drive, 1 year warranty
3/31/2007 11:08:00 AM
Filed under: Hardware, Hacks, Apple TV
Yesterday we found a couple of companies who are offering hard drive upgrade plans for Apple TVs. For those of us who already scored one of Apple's latest gadgets, this post-purchase service is music to our ears (though maybe not to our wallets) - but for potential buyers, PowerMax does one better by selling Apple TVs straight out the gate with a pre-upgraded 120GB hard drive for $449. This is a serious advantage over both MacService and TechRestore, as their post-Apple TV purchase upgrade services raise your total investment to $534 and $497 .99 for the same size drive, respectively. As icing on the cake, however, PowerMax goes yet another step further by offering a full 1-year warranty on the Apple TV, though no hard drive-specific warranty is specified (as I mentioned yesterday, MacService and TechRestore both warranty the drives they install - not the Apple TV itself, however - for up to 3-5 years). All these upgrade options are fantastic for both new and existing Apple TV owners who are experiencing bouts of 40GB-induced claustrophobia. While I'm glad these companies are doing a great job of picking up the ball that Apple so horribly dropped, I still hope the company pays attention to the market and treats us right with the Apple TV 2.0. Heck, it isn't too late even for an Apple TV 1.5 that offers decently sized hard drives. Hey Apple, *knock knock* - you listening?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MLB highlights coming to iTunes Store
3/30/2007 03:09:00 PM

With opening day right around the corner, Major League Baseball and Apple have announced a deal for game highlights to appear on the iTunes Store. Each day there will be a 25 minutes "MLB.com Daily Rewind" highlight show and each week two "'Games of the Week,' featuring full versions of the best games from the National and American Leagues." Each of these games will be $1.99 (compared to $3.95 per game through MLB's Digital Download Service) though there will also be a Season Pass of the "Game of the Week" for $19.99 and a Multi-Pass of the "Daily Rewind" for $7.99 per month.
MLB.TV is probably the best online sports offering, so real baseball fans will probably want to go there instead as it allows you to stream "every 2007 regular season out-of-market game" live plus a lot more. However, this iTunes deal looks interesting, and with MLB under fire for the exclusive DirecTV deal, more media choice is a good thing. We can hope this will be a success and cause MLB to expand their iTunes offering with more games, etc.
To whet your appetite for the season the iTunes Store is now offering a 2007 Season Preview for free download (iTunes Store link).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Switched On: Hollywood's remote control turns revenue off
3/30/2007 03:09:00 PM
Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment:
Last week's Switched On compared two devices that only peripherally compete with each other today, but which represent different approaches to acquiring TV shows. In a fit of serendipity, the arrival of the Apple TV occurred just as Cablevision's remote DVR service (RS-DVR) got the smackdown from a U.S. District Court. I am not a lawyer, but I can understand the rationale. RS-DVR is a video equivalent of the music locke r service that MP3.com tried at the beginning of 2000. A CNET article written slightly after that service's launch noted:
MP3.com admits that it has created a database of some 45,000 unlicensed CDs that it serves through its My.MP3.com accounts. But company executives argue that it is toeing the legal line by offering tracks under the "fair use" exemption of the copyright law, which allows consumers to make copies for personal use.
Now, substitute "Cablevision" for "MP3.com, "TV shows" for "45,000 unlicensed CDs," and "RS-DVR service" for "My.MP3.com accounts." Cablevision's legal defense differed from that of MP3.com's, though. Trying to leverage the established legality of DVRs, it claimed to offer the equivalent of a legally protected DVR device, whereas the court found that RS-DVR was a service -- not a device. Consumers lose because RS-DVR could have enabled cheaper deployment not only of basic virtual DVR service but of long-delayed advances such as virtual multi-room DVR.
Which, interestingly, brings us back to Apple TV.

%Gallery-2367%So this morning I downloaded a copy of the new Apple TV custom plug-in called ATVFiles. It's an Apple TV "appliance", which means that it runs directly in your Apple TV Finder rather than as a separate an OS X application. I copied it over to my Apple TV, installed it in Finder (in /System/Library/CoreServices) and relaunched my system. I was delighted to find it show up listed in the main menu, and when selected it correctly listed the contents of my /Users/frontrow/Movies folder. Unfortunately, I could not actually get the movie to play (early days yet!) but this looks like a huge step forward for Apple TV users. For what it's worth, I do have Perian installed and I can play the movie back in VLC.
Thanks, Aron T.

Apple TV hacked to enable USB
3/30/2007 01:09:00 PM
The Apple TV may go down in history as the most rapidly hacked Apple product ever; the news comes in so fast if we wanted to covered it all, we'd have to spin off Engadget Apple TV. That said, since upgrading the ATV's drive we've been tracking these hacks, and the first really big milestone since has been achieved: use of the disabled USB port. Apple claims the USB is there as a service port, and to make sure no one gets any funny ideas they disabled it in software. Thats where the crew at AwkwardTV come in. After six days on the case, they finagled a way to enable the port, and with it keyboards, mice, external hard drives, and who knows what else. Before you run out and expect to externally expand the storage on your Apple TV, you need to realize that the newfound space will only be available to the applications you added, and not (yet) for media playback. This is certainly an admirable accomplishment, but we wonder, what's the point? If you really wanted to run OS X applications with a keyboard and mouse in your home theater, wouldn't it be more sensible to buy a Mac mini? At least with that you get lots of other goodies, including the ability to make it a proper DVR. Regardless, for those who want a $300 Mac-like product that is small and quiet, this might be the best news you heard all day.

Users report problems searching in iTunes 7.1.1
3/30/2007 11:11:00 AM
Jason O'Grady of ZDNet posts that thousands of Windows users are having problems with iTunes 7.1.1, which they believe will not allow them to properly search the iTunes store. Their search goes into an endless wait, and then they get a message that their iTunes request could not be completed. It seems to me that Apple's response, namely that the "network connection timed-out" error is an Internet problem not a software problem, sounds reasonable. When iTunes connects to the store, it's sending out a request for what is essentially a webpage and this request can hang for any number of network reasons--including those on the Apple end.
O'Grady suggests that users may have to uninstall iTunes 7.1.1 and re-install iTunes 7.0, but I'm not sure that is necessary. The original Apple discussion list thread is here.

Here's a collection of photos showing what things look like when you disable the normal Apple TV software and run iTunes directly on the Apple TV hardware. There's a lot missing--namely the ability to type text for some reason, and all the iTunes labels--but you can still manage to eek out some features that are otherwise missing in the current Apple TV software.
For the most part, you need to run iTunes over a VNC connection from a normal Macintosh, but once you get going you can stream the audio live from any radio station for an indefinite period of time. Make sure to use the Apple Remote about once every twenty-to-thirty minutes to keep Apple TV from automatically going to sleep.

Filed under: Video, Hacks, Apple TV
Yesterday, I posted that the TutorialNinjas site had gotten Joost up and running on their Apple TV. So last night I downloaded the latest Joost beta and gave it a spin. At first, the program seemed to go into a never ending "downloading your channel listings" cycle so I eventually just killed the process and opened the application again--and then it worked.
You do need to run it via VNC so you can type in your account name and so you can switch channels when needed, but while its going you can switch off VNC and let it run on the TV and watch it there. Unlike VLC, it does not respond to the Apple remote.
My kids are now sitting in front of the TV this morning and watching old cartoons on Joost. It works great, although you can't fast forward through the advertisements and my 802.11g network is a little underpowered for Joosting.

With hacks of all kinds appearing at lightning speed to make the Apple TV do everything from play XviD movies to store more than a mere 40GB, I thought it might be time to step back and look at some of the things it can't do. Granted, many things are possible when a device like this lands in the hands of those who don't take no for an answer, but most of these issues I've found are rooted in features that Apple neglected to create (or in some cases, mimic from their ot her software and devices). So until someone hacks and slashes their way through the Apple TV's closed source software, let's examine some of the tricks it can't do:Continue reading Apple TV: What you can't do

Robert Movin over at TidBITS has a nice little article that I expect many of us can identify with. After years of being tech support for his mother (and other family members), he got fed up trying to remotely support her aging PC and decided to take the plunge and get her a Mac. He describes the how he set it up for her, including using VNC to allow him to remotely control it (I'm not sure why he installed OSXvnc when OS X has a built in VNC server, however). He also discusses some security issues like using VNC over SSH, and how to deal with her dynamic IP addre ss.So what are your experiences with setting up Macs for less tech savvy family members? Previously, the crossgrade allowed customers to update their copies of software such as Final Cut Pro to Intel-native versions. And most interestingly, this unannounced move has come just before the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) conference in Las Vegas, which is set to begin on April 14. It has been rumored that Apple will make an announcement regarding a new version of Final Cut Pro at NAB, and this bit of news potentially supports that claim. Four things you might not have expected to find on Apple TV
3/29/2007 12:11:00 PM
Filed under: Odds and ends, Apple TV
Apple TV is proving to be a hacker's delight, a kind of subMini with a complete (if variant) OS X operating system, wireless networking, and many other useful features. It also has a lot of legacy associated with it. Here are a few things you can find on Apple TV that you might not have expected:
- Internet Explorer favorites. Dating back to 2003, you can find a list of Apple-related sites in /Users/frontrow/Library/Preferences/Explorer
- Perl. Apple TV ships with a full 5.8.6 Perl installation for your scripting pleasure.
- Screen capture. You'll find the utility screencapture in /usr/sbin. It works perfectly, allowing you to snap pictures from your Apple TV and store them in the frontrow account. e.g. /usr/sbin/screencapture -tjpeg ~/applelogo.jpg
- Sounds. All your standard sounds (Basso, Frog, Pop, Sosumi, etc) are located in /System/Library/Sounds. If you so hack your system, you can play them in VLC or QuickTime Player and they sound exactly the way you expect. However you have to bring over a copy of System Preferences if you want to assign them to your non-existent Apple TV alerts.

Straightforwardly called 'Complete My Album' (not iComplete, thank heavens), the new feature gives users 99 cents of credit for each track off of a given record, with the reduced price showing up a spec ial page dedicated to the service. Sounds like a good deal to us; and now if you'll excuse us, we've been waiting 10 years to find out what other great tunes are on Hanson's MMMBop album.[Thanks, Bo]

Yep, you read that correctly. We've got a new patch up and running on the public test realms. As you may have guessed from the patch number, the official changes in this patch are relatively minor (this isn't 2.1 or anything!), primarily consisting of bug fixes. (These patch notes are via a post on the forums by Drysc. However, official patch notes should show up here tomorrow.) Can't wait to find out what's in store? Well, don't get too excited, because here they are:
Mac
- Improved memory usage and stability under Mac OS X 10.4.9 using multi-threaded OpenGL
- Attempting to turn in a guild charter with a signature from a player that formed his own guild will no longer result in an inappropriate error message.
- Using the customer support "Auto-Unstuck" will now trigger the one-hour cooldown on the player's hearthstone.
- Players will no longer be able to see their opponents in the Combat Log of an Arena match-up before the game starts.
- Eye of the Storm: Players should no longer be able to exit the bubble before the match starts.
- The gate at the top of the elevator in Mechanar will now remain open while attempting the gauntlet and after Pathaleon the Calculator is killed.
- The Escape from Durnholde event will no longer break during the church part of the encounter.
- Various localization fixes have been applied.
Dvorak: Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone
3/29/2007 08:14:00 AM
Prepare to have your feathers ruffled Apple fanboys, John Dvorak -- a name synonymous with curmudgeon -- has called on Apple to "pull the plug on the iPhone" and pass it along to some other "suckers" before it's too late. His case? Essentially, as a newcomer "there is no likelihood that Apple can be successful in a [cellphone] business this competitive." Echoing similar sentiments already shared by Palm's Ed Colligan. Of course, we' ve already witnessed a newcomer step into the mobile handset business, which Dvorak describes as a "buzz saw waiting to chop up newbies," and emerge as the boutique, go-to provider for high-end handsets -- heard of HTC? Hell, you don't have to be a fanboy or even an iPhone fan to feel the retch of nonsensical nausea welling within. Look, we're not saying Apple's success is guaranteed by any stretch, but let's call this rant what it is: shameless attention whoring. Well, he's got it.

Reader Randomdruid sent along this tip that might interest you if you've picked up Apple's new AppleTV set-top box (I'm too busy working on Sha'tar rep to watch TV, but our good friends at Engadget and TUAW have been doing almost nothing but since the thing came o ut). Apparently, hackers have already gotten WoW up and running on it.It's not too big a deal, since I'm pretty sure the box is running a specialized version of OS X anyway, and of course WoW runs on that. The guys at Tutorial Ninja have worked up detailed instructions on how to get any number of applications working on the AppleTV (including Firefox and Centerstage, the open source Mac media center). Scroll down to the middle of the page there, and on the list of "confirmed working apps," you'll find World of Warcraft.
But there is one catch: it looks like pretty much everything has to be installed onto the hard drive by plugging it into another computer. So not only will you have to crack open your pretty new AppleTV, but odds are that you'll have to somehow run WoW from a text interface. And I don't know how you'd actually play it even if it is running-- one of TN's goals is to "get USB working so people can play WoW comfortably." So it's not as easy as throwing the WoW disc in and jumping into Azeroth.
Of course, if you're someone with the time and talent to do all this, you're probably not playing WoW anyway. But if you've got an AppleTV and are already cracking it open to put all the other cool stuff on it, it's good to know that you have the option to get WoW running on your TV screen. Now all we have to figure out is how to get WoW on the iPhone...Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Hell, you don't even have to be a fanboy in this case to feel the retch of his nonsensical nausea welling within. His case? Essentially, as a newcomer "there is no likelihood that Apple can be successful in a [cellphone] business this competiti ve." Echoing similar sentiments shared by Palm's Ed Colligan. Of course, we've already witnessed a newcomer step into the mobile handset business, which Dvorak describes as a "buzz saw waiting to chop up newbies," and emerge as the boutique, go-to provider for high-end handsets -- right, HTC? We're not saying Apple's success is guaranteed, but let's call this rant what it is: shameless attention whoring. Well, he's got it.

iTunes Complete My Album feature: No, thanks
3/29/2007 08:14:00 AM
Earlier today, Apple introduced a new "feature" to the US iTunes Store* called "Complete My Album." If you've got incomplete albums in your collection that you purchased from iTunes, you can buy the neglected tracks at a reduced price. This offer is good for up to six months from the time you initially download an album.Nice try, Apple, but I neglected the songs I did because I don't want them. Just because they're cheaper or available for a limited time only doesn't make them more appealing. I'm going to guess that the record companies are behind this "feature" and not Apple, as the latter have always promoted single-track purchases, and the former have not.
*If you're seeing this outside t he US, let us know.

Found Footage: Custom Apple TV plug-ins debut
3/28/2007 06:10:00 PM
Awkward TV has posted this video showing a custom Apple TV plug-in in action. The post mentions that this is the second known custom plug-in (you can see the first in action here), and that it allows you to play .AVI files located on the main disk (rather than the iPod-esque Media library). For now those files are hardcoded in, as this is primarily a proof of concept. They did not provide a link for downloads, and there probably won't be a public release for a while.

Apple to credit song purchases towards full album sales?
3/28/2007 05:09:00 PM
Also known as "the feature that should've been there from the start," it sounds like Apple is finally working out deals with labels to allow for the purchase of singles on iTunes to act as credit towards the purchase of the full album from whence they came, at least within a limited time frame. Such a deal has been rumored before, but this time the word is from the New York Times, citing "people involved in the negotiations," which sounds decidedly less sketch. Obviously, there's still much to learn, since we don't know what kind of time period Apple has in mind, and we don't k now how many labels it has on board, but we can think of many a [Via Ars Technica]

Apple TV is...hot!

I've personally noticed that Apple TV tends to run hot. So did Jason Tomczak of Digital Trends. He measured temperatures around 110 degrees Fahrenheit when first running his unit and found numerous posts at Apple's forums about its high temperature operation. So he decided to snap some thermal images, showing the Apple TV in use and posted them to the Web. He found that playing back content caused the unit to warm up about ten degrees. The pictures show Apple TV after boot up, after playing for 30 minutes, after sleeping for various intervals, and after the unit has been turned off.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments[ Full story from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) ]

Every one loves a good list post, and this one is certainly entertaining. Newlaunches.com has compiled their list of Top Ten Apple Products which Flopped. There are some gems in the list, including a couple of products I hadn't even heard of. Here they are: - Apple Cyberdog, which was an internet suite for the Mac OS back in 1996. I hadn't heard of this until now.
- Taligent, an Apple and IBM collaborative OS
- EWorld. Ah, now here's one I remember! An AOL-like online experience for Mac users in 1994, EWorld only lasted two years (but it was fun!).
- Pippin. The Pippin was a game console that I've never had the chance to play with. Too bad.
- The 20th Anniversary Mac. Waaay overpriced but super-cool to look at, the "TAM" as it's called is sought after by certain nerdy collectors...like me.
- Motorola ROKR. Let's just move on.
- Macintosh TV. Let's just move on.
- Macintosh Portable. The $6500 "portable" Mac was about the size and weight of a baby dolphin. The rest should be self explanatory.
- Apple Lisa. As the first personal computer to have a GUI and a mouse, it was a trailblazer. At a cost of $9,995US (that's $21,500US in Feb. 2007 dollars, Newlaunches points out), it didn't sell very well.
- The Newton. Yes, yes, we all knew that the poor, maligned Newt would top the list. However, I love mine, so there.

Skinning Front Row to look like Apple TV

You say your Intel Mac has Apple TV envy? It's understandable, as the Apple TV is suddenly everyone's favorite gadget. Boost its ego a bit with this trick for "skinning" Front Row to make it look more like Apple TV's UI.
It's quite simple, really, as it's just a matter of replacing Front Row's image files with those from the Apple TV. You can even edit the default menus to display the "Apple TV" title. You can download all of the files you'll need - as well as the instructions - here (remember: Back up your resource files first!). When you're finished, it will look like the image above.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It seems like some folks (including us) just can't let their Apple TVs sit quietly next to their televisions, with the temptation for modification overcoming any thoughts of preserving the warranty. Now, those in need of a little inspiration have a pair of new hacks to choose from, neither of which involve minor surgery on the d evice. While it sort of defeats the purpose of the device, the first mod will let you hook up an Apple TV to your MacBook for a little small screen viewing, requiring only a patch to Apple TV's Finder.app and copying a couple of framework files from the Apple TV to the MacBook. Of course, the necessary patch isn't exactly readily available, with the folks at the appropriately-named Apple TV Hacks saying they're "evaluating the legalities" of releasing it. Also coming to us from the same site is a somewhat simpler mod for booting the Apple TV from a USB drive, which simply requires installing a duplicate copy of the Apple TV OS on the drive, hooking it up, and pressing a button combination on the remote while it boots. As Apple TV Hacks points out, that should open up the possibility of making modifications to the Apple TV without actually having to crack it open and remove the drive.Read - Apple TV Hacks, "Apple TV running on a Macbook"

The Apple TV has now been hacked to boot off of an external USB HD. This means, simply, that we're well on the way to seeing full access without cracking the case and thus obviously voiding the warranty. Apparently, this is done by booting into recovery mode using a modified disc image on the external drive. Now this is not a completely worked out hack yet, and there's still much left to do, but this is a significant milestone as it shows that, in principle, the Apple TV is bootable from an external hard drive. Further it shows that the USB port which Apple claimed "is only used for service and diagnostics" and unable to recognize USB devices is, in fact, live and can be used.

Maybe I shouldn't be admitting this publicly, but I'm a big fan of South Park. So I was pleased to see the latest Apple Pro Profile is about the South Park Studios and their use of Macs. The construction paper feel is produced with Photoshop and Maya on 30 Power Mac G5s, with the final product requiring Motion, Shake, and some other software packages as well. Then the heavy lifting is done by a 120 AMD processor Linux render farm. One neat tidbit: by working nearly around the clock, they manage to push out each episode the day it airs on Comedy Central, with an entire episode being produced in only 6 days. It's an interesting look behind a fun show. Check out the complete profile on Apple's Pro site.[Via Digg]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Apple TV hacks coming fast and furious: VLC, SSH, VNC, Apache and more
3/26/2007 08:09:00 AM
Filed under: Hardware, Hacks, Developer, Apple TV

The Apple TV hacks are coming fast and furious as recorded on both the Something Awful thread we already told you about, and at the Apple TV Hacks blog. Over at Something Awful, user macado shows the Apple TV successfully decodi ng a 720p clip using the open source VLC player (though he cryptically says only for 6 minutes). Other users have demonstrated Firefox and iTunes running on an Apple TV as well. Meanwhile at Apple TV Hacks, there are already tutorials up on getting SSH and AFP access and even setting up Remote Desktop (VNC) and Apache.
In short, the Apple TV has been busted wide open and is well on its way to being hacked into a general purpose (if rather underpowered) mini Mac min i (Mac nano, perhaps?), running OS X 10.4.7 as you can see above. For those of you with a hankering to break your warranties, it looks like the Apple TV is eminently hackable and has a lot of potential.

Convert those Xvix/WMV/Divx for Apple TV playback

Whenever Apple (or any other company for that matter) comes out with a device that plays back some, but not all existing, media file formats people get upset. Apple TV suffers from this, as many people bemoaned the lack of Xvix/WMV/Divx support. Now, using only QuickTime Pro, Automator, and lots of time you can encode all those videos into Apple TV format and enjoy your video on a nice, big HDTV.[via D igg]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

UNO 1.5
3/26/2007 07:09:00 AM

I'm not one to fiddle with the appearance of my Mac's UI. I think Apple did a pretty good job, and I see no reason to change it. That being said, certain parts of OS X's default appearance can be a little inconsistent, and the custom UI theme called UNO was designed to make OS X consistent across the board. UNO 1.5 has just been released, and it is a complete rewrite of everyone's favorite OS X theme. If you want to banish Brushed Metal from your Mac, or just like the look of the so called 'Unifi ed Toolbar,' then UNO is worth checking out.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Now make Genius Bar reservations up to 2 days in advance
3/26/2007 06:08:00 AM

If you've every tried to get a spot at an Apple Store genius bar during a busy time, you know how frustrating it can be. Fortunately, you can set up an appointment using Apple's concierge service (either on a Mac at the store or online at home). But until recently, unless you were a ProCare member ($99/year), you could only make an appointment for later the same day. Fortunately, however, Apple has finally realized that it would make much more sense if you could schedule appointments further in advance. They have opened scheduling up to two days in advance for "guests" and 14 days in advance for ProCare members.
To make a reservation, just go to the Genius Bar page and select your local Apple Store from the drop-down list.

Apple TV OS loosed into the wilds
3/26/2007 05:08:00 AM
Filed under: Home Entertainment, Media PCs
It was just a matter of time until the eminently hackable Apple TV OS was released into the wild. After all, the OS and internal disk drives have already been ripped from the svelte chassis, mixed in with higher density disks, and burned back into Apple's set top box. Of course, the 200MB Apple TV OS image is likely locked to Apple TV hardware and runs on Intel procs only, but these are just minor annoyances as we've seen before. Given its mach kernel and BSD origins, it won't be long before Apple TV becomes the homebrew happy-hacking platform of choice. Hear that team XMBC, there's a new sheriff in town. Now please, somebody enable that goofy USB port for something a bit more useful than "service," mkay?

What's the rest of the world doing with their Apple TVs?
3/25/2007 04:08:00 PM

Ok, so you've set up your recently shipped Apple TV, you've upgraded its HDD, and you've got it to play your Xvid movies. For just a moment, why don't you take a break from continually rebooting your Apple TV just so you can see the flashy startup sequence again to spare a thought for the res t of the world and the pitiful amount of TV and movie content that their respective iTunes stores make available to them. See, whilst you may have spent the last few days loading up your collection of TV shows and movies from the last 18 months, the rest of the world has had to settle for "home movies, music, and photos", as quoted from the Apple TV's UK Apple Store product page. Professor Joshua Gans at the Melbourne Business School spotted a bunch of these little disclaimer differences on the Australian Apple website too: Apple even went through the trouble to replace all the tiny TV show / movie titles in the US promotional material with stock imagery on regional sites with no video con tent. Hit up the read link to see some comparisons between the Australian and US Apple TV literature, and then drop back here to tell us what exactly you've been watching on your new box.

Apple refutes "late Leopard" rumors

The release date of Mac OS X Leopard is the subject of more speculation yet again, with a source at Apple telling Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg that the OS is still planned for a Spring release. That's in response to an earlier rumor from the endemically unreliable DigiTimes which suggested that the release might be delayed until October. Earlier we heard that Leopard might make be released as early as this month, although it appears as if the Apple source wasn't directly responding to this suggestion. Either way, we're back to square one: no information apart from Apple's original announcement that it'll be out in sometime in the next few months. Exactly when is anyone's guess, and one that unfortunately can't be predicted using the usually infallible Apple rumor generator.[Via digg]

Ban Drawbaugh over at our sister site Engadget has a fantastic tutorial up about upgrading your Apple TV's harddrive. As David pointed out, the stock 40 gig harddrive just isn't going to cut it for most people (my iPod is 80 gigs for goodness sake). Ben uses the Terminal to do the drive cloning (though I imagine for those of you who avoid the Terminal I am sure you could use Carbon Copy Cloner) and i Partition to resize the media partition.

Leopard Axing Input Managers?
3/24/2007 03:08:00 PM
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, OS, Rumors
There's a disturbing rumor floating around the Mac web today. According to this article at Infinite Loop, Leopard will no longer support Input Manager hacks. Input Managers allow programmers to insert code into cocoa applications, thus allowing the addition of new functionality. etc. These are somewhat controversial as some claim this is a potential security hole. Nonetheless, Jon Hicks brings this up in con nection to my absolute favorite input manager plugin, Saft for Safari, which will presumably be rendered non-functional in Leopard. As Hicks notes, its not clear yet whether this also affect the widely used SIMBL plugin architecture (whose author, Pith Helmet developer Mike Solomon, says he won't be sure until he can play with Leopard). If, like me, you're a big fan of Saft and SafariStand and Chax, etc. this is cause for concern. It is to be hoped, of course, that the authors of the various plugins will find some other way of implementing their feature enhancements, even if Apple does close the Input Manager route. The best thing would be for Apple to implement an open plugin architecture for doing th is sort of enhancement, but I won't be holding my breath on that one. In any case, this is a potential concern for those of us sure to upgrade to Leopard right after it launches.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Gartenberg, with Jupiter Research, called some folks at Apple in light of recent delay rumors surrounding Leopard, the next iteration of OS X. Unnamed people at Apple confirmed with Gartenberg that Leopard is still on track for a Spring release which gives Apple until late June to ship on time.I just hope we get a firm shipping date from Apple soon, all this speculating is making me tired.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
