iPhone Launch Gallery: Michigan Ave. in Chicago, IL
6/29/2007 08:08:00 PM
Filed under: Retail, Other Events, Apple, iPhone
I braved the mean streets of Chicago to bring you, dear readers, photographic proof that Apple did in fact launch the iPhone today. Around 5:00, I strolled up State Street (that great street, I just gotta say) to the AT&T Store near the Chicago Theatre, where the nearby television station was out in force. Then, I walked north, to the Michigan Avenue Apple store, where it was madness. The line curved all the way around the building, and there must have been ten or fifteen cameras, along with six or seven times that many onlookers standing in front of the store. At 5:45 CST, the 50 or so Apple employees opened the door, and the line started rolling through. Seems like things moved fast, and by 6:30 or so, lots of people had walked out carrying the little black bags with the iPhone on the side, and they started letting us plebians into the store to check out the iPhon e. Having loaded TUAW on all their display units, I headed out at around 7:00, and from what I saw, they still had tons of iPhones left, even after having sold a good few hundred from my estimation. All in all, a very smooth launch. Check the gallery below to experience it for yourself.

Line Report: Sherman Oaks, CA Apple Store
6/29/2007 05:09:00 PM
The store has officially closed for the time being (until 6PM, of course) and they have put up black material covering the windows. Its all very theatrical and adds to the element of excitement. The line is now up to more like two hundred but I've also heard reports from other Los Angeles area stores like the Glendale Galleria, that the lines are stretching all the way outside and winding through the parking structure.I feel bad for those people and a little better abbot my 95th place i line -- at least according to the last count conducted by mall security. At the moment, people are well-behaved. I just hope that continues when the covers come off the windows and the selling frenzy b egins. On a very positive note, some Apple Store employees have just come by with boxes filled with bottled water are are giving it away for free to the people in line. A very nice gesture indeed and appreciated. Although, I would appreciate it more if they told me they had enough iPhones to sell to all the people in front of me and that I could still get one. Oh well, at least I got some water out of it.Permalink | Email this | Comments

It ain't easy to get an iPhone review unit
6/29/2007 03:10:00 PM
Filed under: Odds and ends, Apple, iPhone
I'm not saying that Apple didn't send out any iPhone review units, but they sent out very few (probably in the single digits). It makes sense, since everyone is worked up into a froth at the moment about the iPhone. Apple doesn't need to beg publications to review this thing, they will be selling a boatload of 'em anyway. That being said, you would think a magazine like Popular Science would be able to get their hands on an iPhone ahead of time. It would appear not so much. The emails traded with Apple are particularly amusi ng.
So, while you're online for an iPhone look to your left and your right.. you just might see some tech reporters anxiously hoping to get their iPhones before deadline.

Live reporting from Mike Rose, our man-on-the-spot, transcribed by Erica back at the TUAW desk.
3:58. It's a zoo. There are probably two times as many gawkers and press than actual people in line. Mike's TUAW shirt is recognized by a German fan.
3:59. It's officially crazy time. Apple crew members have walked down back stairway to take their positions inside the store.
4:00. There are officially more camera crews on-hand than at any recent vice-presidential debate. Demo dolls and dudes are going up and down the line handing out fliers for mobile websites and PA systems with docks. The crowds are muttering. Are the doors about to open?
4:03. The crew is OUT. High fives for everyone on line--and probably a video of all this is going out this second to CNN. The Apple crew is all cheering--and well they might, given that they're all getting free iPhones from Steve.
4:05. CBS and GM building employees are leaving work, exiting the office and blinking bemused as they call family on their cell phones. "You wouldn't believe what's going on here..."
4:05. A bystander mutters: "Only in New York!". Mike says; "wrong!" The Plaza hotel across 5th ave, scaffolding across the facade, looms over the scene.

Seems like no one's home at T-Mobile on 8th Avenue today, where we didn't even have to push people out of the way to get several clear shots of the front of the store.
All-in-all, certainly not a red letter for anyone but AT&T in the world of cellphones; consumers, however, can likely expect short lines and enthusiastic associates at their local "off-brand" stores if they do happen to be in the market for a new handset -- and let us just say, if you have in fact avoided being infected with this clever and almost omnipresent virus, we tip our hat to you friend.

Oh, buddy. It's 4:30 in the middle of the country, lots of people are just starting to get out of work, and things are really starting to pick up now.- Benjamin Gilbert sends pictures from his campout at Legacy Village in Ohio.
- Andrew Abate is lineblogging from the West Farms Mall Apple Store in Farmington, CT, where California Pizza Kitchen is apparently handing out free food.
- Nick Bodkins sends a note from Orlando, FL, where he's sitting in line at the Millenia Mall. Apple is handing out free water there, too, and apparently security says no shopping throughout the rest of the mall.
- Danny Perez is at the 5th Ave. Store in New York (where I believe our own Mike Rose is headed very soon), and says the feeling there is good: "There are about 300 people in line that I can tell from my location, I'm almost at the end of the line, they are giving away some free stuff. Items include, FREE Baked Caramel Popcorn (FreeEvil), Water (Water is directly from Apple - Branded by smartwater), Virgin Atlantic Airlines just gave away a gift bag with toothbrush/paste, Eye covers, Ear plugs, socks, and Lemonade. I also got some free music CD's and the best part, A FAN TO COOL OURSELVES OFF!!!"
- And finally, the best thing I've heard today comes from Rick and Simon at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Jose, CA: The Woz is live and in person there (or was, this afternoon), and apparently the Hummer and the Segway made the trip as well.

Apple iPhone accessories and prices
6/29/2007 07:09:00 AM
Apple today published a page listing all Apple-branded iPhone accessories and their prices. A brief overview:- The Bluetooth Headset falls in line with the rumored $129 price tag, and also comes with an iPhone Dual Dock and the Travel Cable. The headset "delivers up to 5.5 hours of talk time and up to 72 hours of standby time."
- The basic iPhone Dock will set you back $49
- The "Dual Dock," which plugs into the iPhone and charges the Bluetooth Headset also costs $49
- The standard stereo headset will set you back $29
- The iPhone Bluetooth Travel Cable, which lets you charge your headset while you're syncing your iPhone (it connects to the bottom of the dock connector): also $29
- And the iPhone TTY Adapter, designed to accommodate the iPhone's recessed headphone jack and let you plug in any .5mm headphone into the iPhone is a simple $9
Also on the page are details about compatibility with current iPod accessories: Many accessories, like chargers and speakers, will work, even if they haven't been "certified" for use with the iPhone. The iPhone will warn you when you plug in an "uncertified" accessory, and will offer to switch to Airplane Mode, which would eliminate possible audio interference from the accessory -- but also prohibit you from making calls.
Check all the deets at Apple's site.
Thanks Fraser Drew!

Moving your Parallels virtual machine to another Mac
6/29/2007 06:09:00 AM
Filed under: Software, How-tos, Tips and tricks, Apple
Recently, I decided it was time to do a clean install of OSX on my current primary home Mac -- a 20" Intel Core Duo iMac named Phoenix. Ordinarily, when I first get a new Mac, I usually wipe it completely and start over with a fresh install, putting in only the things I want -- but for some reason never did that with this one. So, it was time. Really, who needs all those printer drivers and languages anyway?Another reason I wanted to nuke and pave this Mac was to reclaim the space taken over by the Win dows partition devoted to Boot Camp. Yes, I realize I could have accomplished that by using the Boot Camp Setup software, but I was already ready to do a fresh install anyway, so I went ahead and just reformatted the drive completely. Once it was done, I went happily along installing the things I would need on the iMac to get my daily work done: Microsoft Office, NetNewsWire, Firefox, Adobe Photoshop, etc.
I also wanted to use Parallels on this Mac as well, so I installed that too. However, and this is the cool part, I didn't want to take the time to reinstall Windows and have to reconfigure it, do all the updates, etc. Instead, I copied the Parallels Folder from my MacBook Pro, which is located in the Documents Folder inside my Users Folder, to my iMac, started up Parallels and presto: Windows booted and I was good to go. No reinstall or re-authorizat ion necessary. The only thing that I needed to install again was Parallels Tools -- even though it was already installed.
Once I did that, Windows functioned exactly the same way it did on my MacBook Pro. Fortunately, the serial number I used for my Windows install on the MacBook Pro allows it to be installed on two machines, otherwise I would delete it immediately from the MBP. So, just a tip should you ever need to wipe your drive and wish to alleviate at least some of the resulting hassle associated with putting all your software back on your Mac.
I'm sure this would also work if you were moving from an old Mac to a new one. Or, you could always use the Migration Assistant, which should accomplish the same thing. Although, being a hands-on type I usually migrate everything manually and drop it where it needs to go. But that's a subject for another post. For now, any questions?Permalink | Email this | Comments

3G iPhone for Europe to be announced Monday?

Oh man, here we go. Another rumor about that 3G European iPhone. This time, the source is G uy Kewney of Newswireless who doubles as eWeek.com's European wireless editor -- i.e., he's the real deal. As the story goes, Apple is set to announce a four-way deal: Vodafone and T-Mobile on the carrier front with Carphone Warehouse out in front as the MVNO. Hmmm, well, this kind of deal would certainly provide Apple's upstart mobile phone with far broader coverage than a Vodafone exclusive could muster while providing a solid brick-and-mortar base on a continent (mostly) void of Apple stores. Best of all for Europeans, the announcement expected on Monday will be 3G. That's right, while you're queuing up for EDGE data, Europeans might be unwrapping an HSDPA iPhone in 4-way press release. Here's the rub, bub: do you really think Apple will provide Europe a 3G iPhone before the end of the year and not release it in the US at the same time? Now the tough choice: stand in line for your 2.5G iPhone or wait and see what happens on Monday with this rumor (and we repeat, it's just rumor at this point). Decisions, decisions. [Via Pocket-lint]

More press coverage late tonight for some product launch tomorrow...o. BusinessWeek on the mojo of Apple product marketing; includes trenchant observations like "consumers just want a great experience...they don't buy platforms" and tidbits from PortalPlayer former CEO Gary Johnson, who says that Apple's easygoing California image is an illusion -- the company is as hardnosed and difficult to please as they come.
o. USAToday with a slew of stories, including the obligatory "thousands in line" piece and a Q&A with Steve Jobs and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson. Revealed here: Steve's got butterflies in his tummy, and we should expect some announcements on corporate (read: Exchange) enhanced support on the iPhone in the next few weeks. I would imagine this is something along the lines of the rumored ActiveSync licensing deal, but it might also be a reference to the announced Q3 availability of Visto Mobile for iPhone.
o. The New York Times delves deeper into the decision to go with EDGE over the faster 3G wireless data standard for the iPhone. Ubiquity of the EDGE footpr int much lower power usage were the deciding factors; the WiFi auto-cutover should improve the browsing experience for many.

Jobs, Stephenson sound off in iPhone interview

Thankfully for us all, the iPhone launch is but hours away, and what better way to make those last second decisions on braving the crowds (or not) than to read over what's likely to be the last pre-iPhone-launch interview with both Apple and AT&T's head honchos? Sitting down with USAToday, Steve Jobs and Randall Stephenson faced a number of dutiful questions, and a few of the answers were intriguing to say the least. Besides bragging about revolutionizing the mobile phone industry and finally producing "a phone people like," the duo noted that the 6:00PM launch time was chosen to give "everyone the same shot" at nabbing one, and they both made it seem like shortages wouldn't be too much of an issue. Most noticeable was the dodging of the inevitable EDGE inquiries, as both execs spent more time boasting of the iPhone's ability to "fluidly switch from EDGE to WiFi" than actually responding to the "sluggish" criticism received thus far. Furthermore, Jobs noted that Apple was already working with a number of companies in regard to corporate email, and while he wouldn't budge when questioned about an overseas release, he did state that "selling 10 million" during its first year was a "realistic goal."[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

Various iPhone scenarios get odds

Okay -- we are a little more than a day away from the iSomething's launch (remember kids, only take 2 please), and Apple stores along with AT&T locations are probably handing out sedatives about now. Will the iPhone become an iBomb or an iSeller? It seems pretty obvious that Apple's standard marketing blitz has propelled the iPhone into the stratosphere of expectations, and initial reviews are in already as well. But, how about seeing odds on what will begin to happen in the iUniverse tomorrow? Will your $600 bundle of joy spontaneously combust, for example? BetUS is happy to give you 150 to 1 on that. Will someone shell out at least $1,500 on eBay? A mere 2 to 1![ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

Prospective iPhone line standers hoping to start the wave when the FedEx truck rolls up are gonna have to come up with some other plan for glory -- looks like iPhones have already started arriving at Apple and AT&T stores, which we can confirm with multiple sources at various retail spots. Even though El Jobso banned cameras from the backrooms of iPhone outlets, an overzealous employee as just posted some pics in the MacRumors forum of an iPhone in just such a spot. Too bad Sunshine McBrilliant included his obvious wrist tattoo in a couple of these pics -- maybe he can list "blurry cameraphone photography" on his resume when he starts looking for a new job tomorrow.[ Full story from Engadget Mob ile ]

Apple slides 1.3-megapixel iSight into new MacBook Pro
6/28/2007 03:09:00 PM
We'll admit, Apple's tightly integrated webcam sure gets more attention than most, but the latest blurb about the iSight has less to do with movie stars or underground storage facilities and more with sheer utility. Apparently, the latest round of MacBook Pros have been equipped with an entirely new camera, and after seeing an all new USB Product ID code, a co uple of curious onlookers had to find out more. By testing an older unit and then flocking to a retail Apple store to try out a shiny new machine, it was realized that the sensor in the iSight had indeed been upgraded to 1.3-megapixels; 'course, it certainly won't revolutionize subway snapping, but hey, if you needed one more reason to pull the trigger on a new MacBook Pro, you're welcome.[Via TUAW]

Apple posts iPhone Premiere details
6/28/2007 07:09:00 AM
Continuing the trickle of iPhone news that they have been releasing Apple has just posted some more details about the iPhone launch tomorrow (!). As we know, the iPhone will go on sale tomorrow, June 29th, at 6pm. We now know that you will be able to pick up 2 iPhones per customer at Apple Stores, which says to me that Apple isn't too worried about their inventory level though they are available on a first come, first served basis. Also of note, all Apple stores will be open until midnight on Friday, so you nocturnal Mac users can try and snag an iPhone of your own. Starting on June 30th, and going throughout the summer, App le Stores will open at 9am so early birds can get themselves an iPhone. Also of note, you'll be able to order an iPhone from Apple's online store starting at 6pm PST on the 29th.Starting on Saturday Apple Stores will offer workshops for the iPhone, and you will be able to get support for your new phone at the Genius Bar (which I imagine will make waits for Geniuses even longer).
Please note that all of this info applies to Apple Stores only, AT&T stores may very well have different policies.Read | Permalink | Email this |  ;Comments

Here's a little detail I missed the first time I read today's missive from Apple: you can now check the availability of iPhones at the Apple store nearest you. Simply go to this website, select your state, and you'll get a list of the Apple Stores in that states with a circle next to them. Green means they have iPhones, and red means they are plum out. There is no word on how real time this availability checker is, but it has the potential of saving you some time.

David Pogue, tech columnist for the New York Times, is one of the select few who were granted pre-release iPhone review units. This hot little item has tongues wagging, and people itching to plunk down cold hard cash to get one. Oddly enough, despite all the hype Apple has been a little coy with all the details about the iPhone. David is shedding some light on the subject by answering some common questions about the iPhone. Yes, it has a vibrate mode (though Pogue says it is 'weak'),
I won't steal David's thunder, so read his post for all the gory details.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It would seem that Apple is eating their own dogfood in regards to Web 2.0 applications for the iPhone. Go visit reader.mac.com, I'll wait. At the time of posting you'll get a splash page like the one shown above (assuming you aren't using an iPhone to visit it). The iPhone in that graphic clearly shows a web based RSS reader designed just for the iPhone (perhaps it syncs with your Safari RSS feeds). It is hosted on .Mac, so does this mean we'll be seeing some useful additions to .Mac very soon? I hope so!

Lots of the youngsters out there are clogging up the Internet tubes with their torrents and their Rock and Roll music. Sadly, the choice of BitTorrent clients (BitTorrent, in case you aren't familiar, is a distributed peer to peer downloading protocol. The more people who download something, the faster it is for everyone... in theory) on OS X has been missing a biggie: uTorrent. uTorrent is the most popular Bit Torrent client on Windows, and it was recently purchased by BitTorrent, Inc which is a mighty fine stamp of approval if you ask me. Sadly, it isn't available on the Mac . So very, very sad.Weep no longer, torrent obsessed Mac fiends! uTorrent is coming to OS X and according to TorrentFreak it is pretty slick. It is faster, smaller, and simpler than the other offerings on OS X and it is free. What's not to like? Ah, right, the fact that it is in closed beta at the moment.

What happened to the iPhone's Ringtones tab?
6/27/2007 02:10:00 PM
Filed under: Handsets, Software, Apple, OS X
See that picture on the right? It comes straight from the iPhone's Q&A page. Go ahead, count the iTunes tabs... we'll wait. Right, 8 tabs. Up until now, Apple's only been showing the iPhone's iTunes sync with 6 tabs: Summary, Info, Music, Photos, Podcasts, and Video. So what can we expect on the other two (assuming this isn't another graphics screw-up)? Well, MacRumors is speculating Ringtones on one of them, and we think they're right. After all, we photographed a Ringtones tab during the iPhone's MacWorld debut. They're reporting that the unreleased iTunes version 7.3 -- listed as a requirement on the iPhone specs page -- will introduce a steep, $0.99 ringtones service to create your own 30 second ringtone from available iTunes (store) tracks. No word on whether it will work with tracks you already own. Whatever the case, Apple certainly seems poised to make good on their promise to "surprise and delight" iPhone owners with software updates. $0.99, though? If true, well, it would definitely be surprising since that's the cost to purchase a full single. Now, what could that other tab be for?[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

In parallel to his iPhone review, Uncle Walt also publis hed an email conversation he had with Steve Jobs. While most of Jobsie's "we don't talk about future products" responses could have been foretold, one response is worth noting. When asked about the lack of instant messaging, video recording, and real-time GPS navigation, Steve responded with the following: "I will say that the iPhone is the most sophisticated software platform ever created for a mobile device, and that we think software features are where the action will be in the coming years. Stay tuned." Right, software. Remember Apple's promise of free software updates that will "surprise and delight" both Apple TV and iPhone customers? Well, they've already delivered a v1.1 YouTube update for Apple TV and certainly the most notable of missing features -- MMS, iChat, A2DP, text copy and paste, video recording, MP3 (or AAC in the case of Apple) ringtones -- are all software related. Sure, you can't download a 3G or GPS radio, but there's certainly hope of filling the gaps on the software side.[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

Credit Suisse: Vodafone likely to carry (3G?) iPhone in Europe
6/27/2007 04:09:00 AM
Filed under: Handsets, Vodafone, HSDPA, UMTS, Apple, OS X
According to a Credit Suisse research note, Vodafone is the frontrunner to carry sole rights to the iPhone in Europe due to their coverage in most European markets. Fine, we've heard this before. The difference this time, however, is an accompanying " confirmation" of a mostly done-deal by way of anonymous Vodafone sources to Europe's Bright Magazine. The story is also being carried by Europe's mainstram media including reputable Dutch news site, nu.nl. Of course, if Apple's going to sell 6 million European iPhones in the next 3 years as expected by Credit Suisse, then you can bet that little slab will be sporting a 3G radio for data-happy Europe. Of course Apple already promised Europe an iPhone in Q4 and, funny enough, 5 million units of the 2nd generation iPhone are rumored to begin shipping from Taiwan in September. Surely, Stevie boy won't release a 3G iPhone in Europe without spreading the love Stateside will he? But let's not get too far ahead ourselves, mkay, it's all just speculation heaped upon rumor at this point. [Via MacDailyNews, thanks Beef S. and William M.]

iPhone facts from the first reviews
6/26/2007 06:09:00 PM
Filed under: Handsets, Apple, OS X
Well, the first reviews are in. But you may have missed some of the more interesting factoids unearthed by the trio of gadget reporters deigned worthy by El Jobso to get a pre-launch iPhone. Here's a few fresh n' interesting iPhone facts right off the presses:- The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity. Damn son!
- There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text! WHOA! Big, big mistake.
- No A2DP support. That, friends, is such a huge bummer right there.
- Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone -- even if it's just a raw MP3. No additional ringtones will be sold at launch.
- On a PC the iPhone syncs with Outlook for calendars AND addresses! Noice.
- It supports Exchange in some capacity, according to Walt, but he doesn't exactly say how.
- Pogue again confirms document file reading -- but not editing -- for PDF, Word, and Excel (only).
- Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Sorry everybody, that's that.
- It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there?
- Oh, and no MMS. And sorry, no voice dialing, either.
- Contact groups can't be emailed as contact lists.
- Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh.
- Apple can (and supposedly will) be rolling out periodic updates -- no surprise there.
- Battery life is, somehow, almost as mind-blowingly good as Apple claims for calls, music, and movies.
- As we suspected, users are prompted with lists of WiFi networks if you're not nearby a trusted hotspot. We've seen this on other phones, and we're afraid this would get friggin annoying.
- It's said to be very scratch resistant. The facade both front and rear apparently just doesn't pick up marring like regular iPods do.
- Voice quality is said to be good -- not great.

iPhone syncs with Outlook and Entourage
6/26/2007 06:09:00 PM
It was definitely quickly glossed over in today's iPhone activation and sync walkthrough, but Apple pretty clearly stated that Mac users with Entourage can sync their calendars with the iPhone through iTunes, and PC users can sync their Outlook calendars the same way. That's totally heartening for any corporate calendar users wondering how they were going to get their datebooks on their new phone, but there was no mention whatsoever of contact syncing via Outlook / Entourage for Active Directory, just Apple Address Book and Yahoo Address Book (which could potentially leave PC users in the lurch). So, your thoughts?Update: According to Mossberg's early review it does in fact sync contacts too! Not the same as live, over the air AD access like on WinMo, but definitely close enough!

"[W]hen I showed the iPhone to people during that trip and in the days afterward-especially people under 25-the most common reaction was, "I have to have this," sometimes followed by a quick, if alarmingly reckless, consideration of what might need to be pawned in order to make the purchase.... And there it is: one of the most hyped consumer products ever comes pretty close to justifying the bombast."
Baig puts it this way: "[W]ith a few exceptions, this expensive, glitzy wunderkind is indeed worth lusting after... That's saying a lot. After months of hype, Apple has delivered a prodigy - a slender fashion phone, a slick iPod and an Intern et experience unlike any before it on a mobile handset."
Interesting tidbits from both reviews: Levy got a call from Steve Jobs during his evaluation period, just to check on how he was doing (!), and he noted the new thinking behind Apple's buy-it-and-go-home iTunes activation plan. Baig's article includes a sidebar entitled "The Quest Begins" with the get-an-iPhone strategies of a few would-be buyers, and Baig encountered a feature I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else; when he finished watching A Bug's Life (it would have to be a Pixar film) on his iPhone, the device asked him if he wanted to clear the movie from memory to reclaim the space. Nice.

First "official" reviews of the iPhone are out
6/26/2007 05:12:00 PM
Sure, there's been a lot of speculation and discussion about the iPhone, its features and its usability in the mainstream and online press. We might even be guilty of a little speculation here at TUAW, too. I know, try to contain your surprise. Fortunately, speculation time is coming quickly to an end as release day approaches and we get real announcements of data plans and other details. In a ddition to all the "official" announcements, we've got some actual reviews of the device hitting the wires this evening. Some of the lauded Apple pundits dropping reviews today are Walt Mossberg and Katherine Boehret of the Wall Street Journal, who call the iPhone "a breakthrough handheld computer," and New York Times columnist David Pogue, who says the iPhone "matches most of its hype." To be sure, I expected these rather notable Apple fans to express positive reviews about the device. Still, it's good to see actual reviews in print which confirm what I, and many others, hoped the device would be. Reading these reviews, I'm even more convinced I want an iPhone on Friday. Of course, if I really want one, I probably should get in line now -- especially if more reviews like these come out.
What about you, the highly intelligent and discerning TUAW reader? Do these reviews give you any more reason to get an iPhone, or do they make no difference at this point?

Out of all of the hype surrounding the imminent launch of the iPhone, this is the first story to warm my cold socialist heart. Johnny Vulkan of NYC ad agency Anomaly is first in line at the Apple Store SoHo, and has special plans for his jesusphone. Instead of coveting his precious new toy like the rest of us, his iPhone will go right up on eBay where all proceeds from its sale will go to AIDS charity Keep a Child Alive. If game console launches like that of the Wii and PS3 are any indication, early iPhone sel lers on eBay stand to make a killing, and it's nice to see that some of that money will be going to an organization working to stop a nasty virus from doing the same.

Do you get the sense that Apple goofed up a bit while rushing out the iPhone activation videos? It's not just the 80GB iPhone. Aren't all fake numbers supposed to start with a 555? Anyway, yes, this is the same phone number for John Appleseed that was in the iPhone preview video from last Friday. And, yes, I did give the number a call to see what would happen thinking it would connect me to an Apple/AT&T ad. Instead, I heard "The mailbox for number 408-550-3542 is full and cannot accept new messages at this time. Please try again later."
I also dropped John Appleseed a note at his dotMac account, but he didn't reply to that either.

It's no secret or surprise that Apple pushed AT&T into whipping up some new plans for the iPhone -- specialness aside, one look at AT&T and users can get lost in its myriad plans, 44 in all (including prepaid, data, etc.). Not exactly the streamlined customer Apple experience cherishes, so the iPhone just comes with just a few service options (and not a lot to configure) -- but is there really the "Apple premium" associated with buying an iPhone and using the iPhone plan with AT&T? Only one way to find out: let's look at the numbers.Continue reading How does the iPhone stack up in total cost?

As it turns out, there are just so many real iPhone knockoffs we had to skip over most pre-iPhone photoshops / mockups, as well as those ubiquitous iPhone skins; if imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, the clownfish on the iPhone's wallpaper should be turning from orange to bright red right about now. Let's get started, shall we?

Yet one more from CECT, the IP9300, which you can also apparently grab from M8COOL. The innards appear to be identical to the IP2000 -- 3 megapixel cam, touchscreen, dual-band GSM radio. Like the real deal, CECT's wares lack 3G data, but these ones take another giant leap back in time by foregoing EDGE, too. (Hooray for 90s mobile data!) Our favorite part of the IP9300 might be the official-looking FCC certification and "2007 All Rights Reserved" -- right below the backwards Apple logo, of course.
So, are we forgetting any?

AT&T and Apple announce service plans, iTunes activation for iPhone
6/26/2007 06:09:00 AM
Here we go again folks: this time it's a double-dose of PR announcements from Apple and AT&T that finally answer some of our biggest questions about service plans and activation for the iPhone. First up: the iPhone will work with any of AT&T's service plans, but they have put together three bundle plans that include unlimited data, Visual Voicemail (apparently not included if choosing a standard plan), 200 SMS and, of course, roll-over minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. To quote Mr. Jobs, who clearly must have had some influence on this 'give them a simple package' approach: "We want to make choosin g a service plan simple and easy, so every plan includes unlimited data with direct Internet access, along with Visual Voicemail and a host of other goodies." Yes, Steve Jobs is quoted as saying 'goodies.' These bundle plans work like so:- $59.99 for 450 minutes
- $79.99 for 900 minutes
- $99.99 for 1,350 minutes
Speaking of activation, the second press release should offer some relief to those worried about being able to unbox their own phone or waiting for every phone to get activated in the store. Apple and AT&T have announced that iPhones users will be able to "activate their new iPhones using Apple's popular iTunes(R) software running on a PC or Mac in the comfort and privacy of their own home or office." iTunes will guide users through choosing a service plan, authorizing their credit and activating the iPhone, after which they will of course be able to manage the synching process of all their bookmarks, contacts and iTunes media.
Considering unlimited data is included, these plans sound like pretty good deals. Top it all off with lines that should move pretty quickly in and out of Apple and AT&T stores, and we all might just make it through this weekend yet.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Top 5 Reasons the iPhone may not require in-store activation
6/26/2007 04:09:00 AM
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple, iPhone
The iPhone requires in-store activation, right? Right? No one knows, but that won't stop us from speculating about the alternatives. Here are our top 5 reasons you might be able to bring home your iPhone without all the hassles of an in-store sign-up:
5. Apple says you'll need an account with Apple's iTunes store. I have little knowledge about cell phone regulation and what it takes to get a cell phone up and running but I do know you can buy a Tracfone at Walmart and get it going without waiting for an hour or so at the cell phone s tore for a guy to fumble around with your iPhone packaging.
4. About a week ago, I posted about the new Web Object references to the iPhone in Apple's online securebag and storebag protocols. The iPhone Activation URL https://albert.apple.com/WebObjects/ALActivation.woa/wa/iPhoneRegistration suggests that it might be possible to activate an iPhone using nothing more than iTunes--as opposed to the normal and lengthy process of getting a cellphone up and running.
3. We're still waiting for any official plan details to emerge. If the recent GoPhone plans are expanded to the iPhone, the iPhone might prove to be a simp le contract-free affair--although we're probably not talking about a new wi-fi enabled $499 or $599 widescreen iPod sans iPhone enablement. If that's a SIM card slot up-top (or maybe near the battery compartment), maybe you could just take it home, unwrap it yourself and drop in your SIM card and go.
2. Several Apple store employees have spoken about buying the iPhone at the Apple store and bringing them later to AT&T stores for number transfer.
1. No human being should be expected to wait in line as long as common sense would suggest it will take to process each iPhone buyer through account activation this Friday.

Pricing "expert": Apple could've charged more for the iPhone
6/25/2007 07:09:00 PM
It's great to know there's someone out there looking out for the big guy, making sure prices stay high, profits stay fat, and iPhones cost the better part of a grand. That's Rafi Mohammed's job, author of "The Art of Pricing" and head of the dubiously-named consulting firm Culture of Profit. In a recent interview with Blogging Stocks, Mohammed commented that while Apple was on the money with the 4GB iPhone's pricing by keeping it under the psych ological barrier of $500, it could've realistically charged far more for the 8GB model in light of the tremendous buzz it's been treated to. His advice to Apple for future iterations of the iPhone, then? "I'd advise Apple to moderate its discounting and consider setting higher prices when it rolls out models with new features." Alright, dude, enjoy your $800 3G iPhone down the road.[Via Tech Digest]

I have a Treo 650 on AT&Tingular. I use the web lots. (So much, actually, that my phone bill came out to $175 last month because I downloaded so much data. Damn you, Google Maps!) The included browser isn't all that bad: especially when I can tap to mobile versions of my most-frequented sites (m.facebook, or m.twitter, for example).Even with mobile sites, though, and particularly when browsing any-ol' page...well, it's slow.
Crowd: How slow is it?
So slow, OS X's spinning beach ball of death would tire out half way through loading NYT.com!
(Ba dum kish!...?)
Sure, there's a lot of disappointment surrounding Jobs' non-announcement announcement that developers can produce Web 2.0 apps for the iPhone, in place of actual, honest-to-goodness integrated apps a la Apple's own offerings. But Apple's emphasis on the optimization of the web for the iPhone is exactly what the forthcoming iPhone World needs: on AT&Ts paltry EDGE network, how could Apple expect us to fully make use of the full-blown internet via Safari if pages take ages to load?

TUAW Tip: "Right Sizing" in the Open Dialog

A few weeks back, Dave Caolo wrote about double-clicking the pipes at the bottom of Finder's column view to automatically resize a column to accommodate long file names. This feature isn't just in Finder. You might be surprised to learn that the Open File dialog supports "right sizing" and it does so far better than Finder browser windows.
To switch to column view in the Open dialog, click the column icon, just to the left of the location pop-up.
As in Finder, you can double-click the double-pipe to right-size the selected column.
Alternatively, right-click (control-click) the double-pipe to open a contextual pop-up menu (shown above) that allows you to choose from several options. Select right-sizing the s
